Untitled[edit]

Uh.... Where's the NPOV, kids? 71.219.56.228 20:45, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This article is POV garbage. "Encyclopedic content must be VERIFIABLE". Who did the verification for this article? Mormons? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 222.11.207.4 (talk) 14:17, August 28, 2007 (UTC)

Cleanup[edit]

This article currently reads more like a hagiography than an encyclopedia article. It needs editing for a more neutral tone. Some more sources wouldn't hurt either. Kerowyn Leave a note 00:34, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to be bold and try to make this less POV. 98.209.218.242 (talk) 21:07, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ugh, too much work to be done there. It's structural, not just wording problems. Worse than I thought. 98.209.218.242 (talk) 21:17, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've tried to do some clean-up on these still-existent issues. I fear that it's still got problems. A larger overhaul may be necessary. Good Ol’factory (talk) 23:10, 29 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Republican Mother? Input please.[edit]

An earlier comment mentioned that this reads too much like a hagiography. As a historian and member of the Latter Day Saint Movement who dislikes seeing sacred history where it doesn't belong, I agree completely.

Like others, I'm going to be bold and start in cleaning this up. Before I start, however, I'd like some input:

-Why the frequent mentions to her being a "Republican mother" such as "For Lucy as a republican mother"? Why this may be true, it seems to unduly focus upon just one facet of her life.

-Can you verify statements that Lucy Mack Smith is honored by Mormons as a Republican mother?

I'll be looking through the history log to make sure I'm not repeating history (in terms of past edits).

Input please! If you don't think this article needs to be cleaned up, I'd especially like to hear from you--or if you've been frustrated in the past by previous efforts, one way or another.

Two years later, these problems still remain, and I've added the {{POV}} template. This article was clearly written by a Mormon writer from a Mormon point of view, taking the position that the religion is true and Joseph Smith was a true prophet. This is not appropriate for Wikipedia; difficult as it can be, it's important that articles on religious subjects be written from a neutral, objective perspective rather than a believer's one. Edit reverted[edit]

I reverted this addition. The implication seemed to be that Joseph Smith must not have really been told that all religions were false in 1820, otherwise why would his mother have kept searching for a religion? That's an interesting point, but I think it reads too much into the reference that is not there. For starters, it is rather unclear how much Joseph Smith told his mother at the time. For another, the precise dating of the First Vision is unclear, with many researchers suggesting that it might have been later than 1820, which is when Smith recalled it to be in his 1838 history. Who is Smith?[edit]

The article is hard to read. It seems to use the family name at times and I don't know who it is talking about. Sometimes it says Lucy, sometimes Joseph, sometimes Joseph Sr, sometimes Smith. Who is Smith? Vmelkon (talk) 00:50, 2 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OK, looks like that is the rule at wikipedia.Vmelkon (talk) 13:02, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Lead Section[edit]

The lead has too little information and does not include a brief overview of the important parts of the article.HopeGirl2012 (talk) 16:41, 20 October 2021 (UTC) I edited the lead section but I am not sure if my reference was added. "folk magic" is referenced by D Michael Quinn's book, Early Mormonism and the magic world view, 1998. There is still much to be done with this article to improve it.HopeGirl2012 (talk) 20:25, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
