This page was effectively copied from the school's website. I have begun steps to rectify that. I rewrote the "Core Values" section, which originally didn't even mention AMDG or Cura personalis. Any further contribs would be greatly appreciated

Questions

1. which sex did the school serve before becoming coed?? Aaronbrick 21:09, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

When I graduated in 1963 Loyola was all male. We students often dated girls from Notre Dame just north on Charles Street and also Mt. St. Agnes, a short distance away in Mt. Washington.Garthz100 (talk) 23:03, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

I belive that it was an all-male school, being that it would have eventually been complemented by College of Notre Dame of Maryland which is an all female school just up the street. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 05:19, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
Yep, all male until 1971 when Mount St. Agnes was absorbed... and to call ND up the street it stretching it, as the two are right next to each other -- the business school is almost on ND property and the library is shared by the two schools. Liamdaly620 19:34, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
Well at the time that both were founded they would have been up the street form each other, most of Loyolas expansion has been in the last 30 or so years, it least in terms of the buildings. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 03:09, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
Certainly true, a lot of the expansion was at the end of Sellinger's reign and during Hap's... for better or worse, I think they might be overextended, especially with the new stadium they're building off 83 Liamdaly620 03:01, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
Oh boy, there's a lot more planned after the new stadium... think of Belvedere Square, and imagine the campus encompassing everything from Newman Towers northeast to Belvedere Square.

2. Isn't there a famous actress who attended?

I believe a famous male Loyola grad actor was on NYPD Blue. Also the well known competition clasical pianist John Gardecki graduated from Loyola College.Garthz100 (talk) 23:03, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Name Change

There needs to be an official name change on the wikipedia page that reflect's Loyola's new name.Interzil (talk) 04:50, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

As Interzil has brought up moving the article to the new name now, please gain a consensus for the move here. As I understand the situation, this says that change will take place in August of 2009, and this article says there is opposition and that the name must be approved, though approval is expected. So the issues I see are that there is a year to go, it is pending approval, and there is some opposition. I really don't have any opinion on the matter (and will defer to consensus here) but I would like to see some agreement from the regular editors about if and when to move the article. The prospective new article, Loyola University Maryland, is a protected redirect to here. Please let me know if you have any questions or when you reach a consensus. KnightLago (talk) 05:29, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
I agree with moving this page. The name change must be still approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission, but there's really no reason why it won't pass. I say it should be moved, with Loyola College in Maryland redirected to the new page. (Crhayes88 (talk) 13:38, 21 August 2008 (UTC))
I believe we need to wait until the change is official - the article should accurately reflect the current name. Leave the article with the current name for now, changing it once the name change becomes effective. The infobox should also match the article title, although I see no problem with adding the new name to the infobox as long as the current name is left and an effective date of the change is shown. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 17:00, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
I would err on the side of caution in changing the name of the article before the name of the institution itself changed as Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. The homepage still gives "Loyola College in Maryland" and the Press Release states that the change does not take effect until August 15, 2009. One would no more change President of the United States on November 5th to reflect the results of the election because the change has not officially taken place either. I feel any change in the article name before that date is premature. Madcoverboy (talk) 19:51, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
You've not seen the Post-Election Edit War Syndrome that's come up in other parts of Wikipedia have you? ;)
I agree we should wait for the institution to perform and use the rebranding themselves, per the precedent for Aberystwyth University (where the name was announced a couple of months before it took effect) and many others. Timrollpickering (talk) 20:40, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
After further consideration, I would agree with everyone else. Doing so before hand would be premature. Thanks for your insights(Crhayes88 (talk) 14:01, 22 August 2008 (UTC))

Rankings Section

The college's rankings appeared sporadically throughout the page so I decided to add a new heading under "University Properties." Your thoughts? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 148.144.71.172 (talk) 12:57, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Loyola Seal

The Loyola seal will suffice. Stop putting the website derived logo of Loyola on the bottom of the box. It is not a true representation of the school and is steering more towards advertisement rather than encyclopedic representation. Interzil (talk) 17:49, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

Per {{Infobox University}}, the purpose of the "logo" field in the template is "Use for the university subsidiary logo, such as branding image, logotype, athletics logo, corporate emblem, or similar image used on stationery, business cards, publications, newsletters, advertisements, Web sites, flyers, or signs." Per the guidelines for the template, it is an appropriate use. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 17:50, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
I feel that it would be more appropriate if this logo were placed under the website link rather than just floating there and the green background be taken out of the picture. To put it there just as an entity would be redundant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Interzil (talkcontribs) 18:00, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
It was under the website link within the infobox; it could be resized a bit smaller to make it more obvious that it's within the infobox and not floating as a secondary box. If you have a version without the green background, I have no objection to that. A quick search turned up it being used both with and without the green in the school's publications. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 18:11, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
I actually removed the seal from the article altogether. Per Wikipedia's non-free content criterion 3a:
Either the seal should be in the box, or the logo; not both. Both images merely represent a visual identity that has been approved by the college. I picked the logo (mostly because it already had a fair use rationale), but I can see a case being made for the seal. Esrever (klaT) 18:40, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
The Seal is an important thing at a Jesuit School, Esrever. Georgetown University, Boston College, Fairfield University, Loyola University New Orleans, all of these schools feature their seals and logos on their sites. There is a reason for this. My suggestion would be to restore it.Yachtsman1 (talk) 00:38, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Logos and Fair Use Rationales

Please note that images which are copyrighted like your college radio logo and athletics logo do not have Fair Use Rationales for use with the university article. I would recommend adding the appropriate rationales to prevent imagebots from red-flagging. - Jameson L. Tai talkcontribs 05:22, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Total Rewrite

Okay, I think that about does it. I have, essentially, rewritten and/or reorganized this entire article. I used the wiki university guidelines to assist me in this. The Traditions portion should be included under Student Life, and only the bigger ones should be used, with sources from the Sun or some other media to back them up. I want this article cleaned up, and ready for submission for a "good" classification as soon as possible. I also want rationale as to why the photos, etc. can be used. The ultimate goal is for this article to gain "Featured" status. For what that means, just check out Georgetown University. If anyone has any other ideas, please post them here. Wikiproject: Loyola College

Would anyone know how to put together a wikiproject for Loyola? Interzil (talk) 01:12, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

New Rating for WP:UNI

Currently there are still a few problems that prevent this article from being B-Class, but it does qualify for C-Class, which is the new rating I've given for this article. Please visit WP:UNIGUIDE for the proper formatting of university articles as well as the Wikipedia's image policies on image placements, especially on logo files which do not have proper fair-use rationales for the university article. - Jameson L. Loyola College Rugby Football Club

Whose idea was it to merge the two articles? That was a terrible idea, put it back.144.126.196.135 (talk) 18:01, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

The other article was nominated for deletion. The consensus was to merge it into this article. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 18:09, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
I agree it was an awful idea, but that's what they wanted to do. Better that then have it deleted entirely.Yachtsman1 (talk) 00:39, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
They wouldn't deleted it. Barek, you are out of line once again. The Loyola article has been destroyed. Wow. 03:41, 17 October 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Interzil (talkcontribs)
"Out of line once again"? All I did was stated what happened. I am not the one who closed the AfD, and I am not the one who merged the content. As for if it would have been deleted or not, I suggest reading WP:AFD. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 03:46, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
However, you are engaging in a form of disruption to Wikipedia by ignoring the result of the community AfD decision by attempting to undo the merger. I suggest taking your issues to the talk page rather than ignoring how the AfD was closed by an admin. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 03:56, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Seek Consensus

As this article has received considerable work at this point, it is advisable to seek consensus before making any major changes. Thank you.Yachtsman1 (talk) 01:40, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

It's time to start fine tuning this article. I would propose a section entitled "Mottos and other representations". I would also propose photos of campus be taken by students who are editing this article, that they be uploaded onto Wikipedia Commons and used in this article. This includes photos of Housing, Beatty Hall, Jenkins, the Quad, and LND Library.Yachtsman1 (talk) 01:46, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

What all do you propose to include in the "Mottoes and other representations" section? Esrever (klaT) 02:01, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
The Mottos of Loyola.Yachtsman1 (talk) 02:07, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
That one I got. :) I meant, what are the "other representations" you're alluding to? Esrever (klaT) 02:30, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
The Mottos of the Jesuit Order. For an example see Dartmouth College.Yachtsman1 (talk) 02:32, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Loyola Alumni

Is mentioning anything about Colin Finnerty being a current student and lacrosse player, worthwile? Interzil (talk) 16:22, 22 October 2008(UTC)

I don't think so, Interzil. Fame is not inherited, and that poor guy has had enough exposure.Yachtsman1 (talk) 22:41, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
  • Being that John Hall never graduated from Loyola, I switched it up with Michael D. Griffin. Now, I know he only got an MBA, is that awkward? Any insight? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Interzil (talkcontribs) 19:39, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
He graduated from Loyola. That makes him an alumnus any way you cut it. Samwisep86 (talk) 21:23, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
  • Nice change, Interzil, and the MBA is no big deal. Well done.Yachtsman1 (talk) 05:34, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Long Lead

The lead section of this article is rather long. Lead section guidance states there should be no more than four paragraphs. Perhaps the fourth and fifth such paragraphs can be trimmed and combined, with their details covered later in the article. —ADavidB 01:41, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Agreed. I took it down to four paragraphs.Yachtsman1 (talk) 17:59, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Loyola Lacrosse

There is a need for a separate Loyola lacrosse page.Interzil (talk) 17:01, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

I agree--Yachtsman1 (talk) 23:16, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Actually, I think all the sports pages should be combined into a "Loyola Greyhounds" page, with sections that include lax, and other sports. The already existing the men and womens b-ball pages should be merged into it.Samwisep86 (talk) 23:19, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
The separate greyhound athletic page is a great idea, but Loyola men's lacrosse is notable enough to have their own page. Anyone willing to make the first moves?Interzil (talk) 09:22, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

I started the page, please help expand. Use this link as a resource http://loyolagreyhounds.cstv.com/sports/m-lacros/archive/021508aaa.html Interzil (talk) 19:03, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

I am working on a men's soccer page for Loyola as well; the men's soccer program is the only team in the school's history that has won a national championship and all things considered, is probably the most successful athletic program at the school. Any idea why there is a basketball page? The team is mediocre at best.Baccaga (talk) 15:32, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
Because it's the oldest program at the school by far having played since 1909, making it one of the older programs in the country.--Yachtsman1 (talk) 20:30, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
Fair enough; my point is that if we're going to discuss Loyola teams having specific pages on Wiki, the simple fact is that the basketball team is much less deserving than other sports (specifically lacrosse and soccer). That's all. Baccaga (talk) 06:59, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
Well it's a good thing lacrosse and soccer now have pages. We need a Loyola Greyhounds athletic page. Interzil (talk) 15:36, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

What happened to the mascot image??

Just wondering, did the Greyhound image get deleted by mistake??--Funandtrvl (talk) 03:26, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Added alumnus

Harry Markopolos is a Loyola Grad, and I added his name to the list.--Yachtsman1 (talk) 15:49, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

  • I put him on the List of Loyola People a week or so ago. Interzil (talk) 16:45, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Loyola University Maryland change

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how and when we should start the conversion? The name was officially changed on august 15th and will be finalized on late September with a celebration mass. There is a lot of change that must be done, including the actual title of the article.Interzil (talk) 12:43, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

The only thing needed to change the name of the article is simply to move it to the new name. I just tried to do it, but I was told the page was protected. You'll just need to find some administrator to do it. As to when to start the change, if the school's name was officially changed on August 15, then everything should be converted as soon as possible. Esrever (klaT) 15:54, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
  • Patience, please. The new name works fine. The article will be moved eventually. I expanded on a request here. If that particular admin is offline for more than a week or 2, someone should approach another admin. Or if no one interested is comfortable doing so, I will be happy to pester politely ask, just leave me a message at my talk page.- Sinneed 05:48, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
Many thankyous! :)- Sinneed 21:49, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
Drat! Still says I am not big enough (there must be some page history there) - says it needs an admin.- Sinneed 21:55, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
Name change took effect 25 September. Please move over redirect Loyola University Maryland because they wanted to change their name, and the state approved and it took effect on 25 Sept.- Sinneed 22:05, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

{{Editsemiprotected}}

Article at target name needs to be deleted to permit move. See above discussion for renaming of article to Loyola University Maryland --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 22:13, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

I don't think that template will help. I put a speedy delete request in on the target page to have it deleted.- Sinneed 22:28, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
You're right ... when I first added it, I thought the problem was that this article was move protected. I updated the reason when I realized the actual problem was the target article ... but with that reason, the template no longer applies - so I'll change it to the link (so that this discussion makes sense) and strike it out. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 22:32, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

Proposed merge of Center for Community Service and Justice (i.e. into this page)

The Centre of Comunity Service and Justice, at Loyola university, is not notable enough on its own. Wikipedia does not normally have pages on each centre and organization within a university. HappyValleyEditor (talk) 21:02, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

I wouldn't advocate coverage for every center within a university but this is a large and diverse center and integrating it into the university's website would unbalance the website, which is why articles on athletics and on notable alumni are often separated from the university article.Jzsj (talk) 09:30, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
