inventor/pioneer
willing to consider the evidence for the recent edits by 71.97.41.76 changing "invention" to "pioneer" and "conceived" to "recognized" but I would like to see the reasoning. I think Berry is credited as the inventor of the concept. In my research, the earlier credits are for:
- a printer who ran out of white paper and printed part of a telephone directory on yellow paper
- a directory publisher who printed business telephone numbers in a separate directory.
Neither of these is really the concept of the yellow pages which encompasses at least three principles: organization by product or service, advertising beyond a simple telephone listing and separately organized, colored business directory. Therefore I am reverting your changes pending further discussion. Berry's later use of regional and other bundling of services postdates his original concept and I don't know whether those were his ideas or not at this point. David 21:24, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Reuben H. Donnelley, a son of R. R. Donnelley, the Chicago printing company, is generally credited with inventing the yellow pages as we know them today. His company was founded in 1886 and is still in business today as RHDonnelley (www.rhdonnelley.com). You can reference the company's history on this site.
Furthermore, it is possible to view yellow pages directories, in virtually every way identical to those of today (including 4-color advertising), at various places including the R.R.Donnelley headquarters in Chicago, their directory printing facilities in Lancaster, PA, as well as at the locations of various directory publishers, including R H Donnelley, that pre-date the founding of The Berry Company by decades.
