Speculation on future assignments

Speculation, for example on future assignments, can under no circumstances qualify as encyclopedic content. If the speculation is indeed accurate, it can be implemented into the article as soon as it is confirmed - but not before that. This goes whether the speculation is referenced to external sources or not. Hold on a few weeks, and try to keep cool! 83.253.2.105 (talk) 10:27, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Why no middle initial?

Shouldn't the page be named "Lloyd J. Austin"? (including his middle initial)

For example, Raymond Odierno's page is "Raymond T. Odierno".

Sort of depends. If he's best known with his initial, then it could go in. I know the Army tends to prefer adding middle initials but either works, usually. —Ed!(talk) 01:03, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

His campaign and expeditionary medals

Some IP users are adding star's to his GWoTM-E (which would indicate he was awarded it three times) without providing any source other than a badly written other wikipedia article. He is not wearing anysuch in his official portrait nor was he wearing such when he testified before congress on TV a few days back.

Obviously I can't provide a source to prove a negative (proving that he doesn't have such), but going off his bio:

His first stint in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) was with the 3rd until June 2003. This would of gotten him the GWOTM-E which he would of later had the option of exchanging for the Iraq Campaign Medal with 2 campaign star's for phases 1 and 2 (Liberation of Iraq & Transition of Iraq) - but given that he has 3 stars, all of which are explained as follows, he didn't convert it. He was in Afghanistan Sep 2003 to Aug 2005 for Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). This would of gotten him the GWOTM-E OR the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with one campaign star (for Phase 2: Consolidation I), not both. Since he has the ACM w/1 star, not a second GWOTM-E (or he converted a second GWOTM-E into the ACM which would of replaced the second one). His second stint in Iraq as part of OIF was Feb 2008 to Apr 2009. This would of gotten him the Iraq Campaign Medal with 2 campaign stars (Phase's 5 & 6: Iraqi Surge & Iraqi Sovereignty). His third time in Iraq was Sep 2010-Dec 2011 for OIF and then operation New Dawn (OND). This would of gotten him another ICM campaign star for Phase 7: New Dawn)

In photo's and his recent televised appearance he has the GWOTM-E without stars (indicating one awarding), the ACM with one star (for one Phase) and the ICM with 3 stars for three phases. So it would seem to be as follows:

He got the GWOTM-E for his first stint in OIF (until June 2003). For OEF (Sep '03-Aug '05) he got the ACM. For his second (Feb '08-Apr '09) and thrid stint's (Sep '10-Dec '11) in Iraq (OIF, transitioning into OND) he got the ICM.

Obviously that reasoning can't be put in the article because it would be classed as OR, and I'm not suggesting it should be, but there's no source showing him having service stars on his GWoTM-E nor even any decent reasoning so such should definately not be in the article (especially when visual evidence contradicts it).

On a related note, for completeness sake... I'm not sure when/where he got the AFEM? Operation Desert Spring perhaps? Gecko G (talk) 00:28, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

Also, I just noticed that for all three (now four) IP adrress, they all trace back to the same on WHOIS. Gecko G (talk) 23:51, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

His Campaign Stars

For the campaign stars on his Iraq and Afghanistan medals, I'm not sure how (or even if) to cite based on his March 26th appearance before Congress (I think it was a Senate Committee specifically). Most search's return the Reuters coverage version, which is not clear enough to make out. There is this c-span coverage, can that work? Gecko G (talk) 07:14, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Primary title in infobox

Please stop listing General Austin as SECDEF; he is not. He can not even be nominated until President-Elect Biden takes office (and he is not yet a nominee-designate, either; Biden has not officially announced he will nominate).

The correct term at this moment would be Presumptive Nominee. Patrickwooldridge (talk) 19:51, 8 December 2020 (UTC)

Until a source refers to Austin as anything other than Biden's nominee for SecDef, awkward infobox formatting and manufactured titles like "presumptive Nominee" or "nominee-designate" are completely unhelpful. KidAd talk 19:56, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
Any article referring to him as already being nominated is wrong. That said most of the articles I've seen say he's going to be nominated, such as this article titled "Biden announces retired Gen. Lloyd Austin as his pick for defense secretary nominee". It's his pick for nominee, he has not been nominated, since nominating him before he's president is impossible. This is a minor detail but it reflects poorly on Wikipedia when we don't use accurate terms Haxonek (talk) 04:15, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

Consistency in infoboxes

I'm really getting FRUSTRATED with the argument over what to put in the infobox, concerning Biden's choices for cabinet. An editor keeps changing Nominee-designate to Nominee in this article. But, isn't doing the same with the other cabinet picks. Can we not have bleeping consistency across these bio articles??? GoodDay (talk) 01:09, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

Well we should be changing the phrase to nominee-designate in the other articles too, then. He hasn't been nominated yet, he's designated to be nominated. Theoretically Biden could change his mind (although I would be shocked if he did). A lot of this stuff is being done in close to real time as it's happening, so we should expect a few mistakes Haxonek (talk) 04:06, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
@Haxonek: I tried to get consistency across these bios. But strangely enough, while Nominee-designate or Presumptive nominee is being opposed 'here'? The term Nominee is being opposed at the Antony Blinken article. GoodDay (talk) 20:10, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
@GoodDay: My apologies, I thought you wanted to call him the nominee. I agree with you, nominee is the wrong term and saying that we should use that term to avoid formatting issues like KidAd implied in his undo history seems like a really weak reason. I suppose it doesn't matter, he'll presumably be the nominee in a few weeks, it's just weird they feel so strongly about something so trivial and so demonstrably wrong. Haxonek (talk) 21:29, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
I just got frustrated with the constant reverting here & at Blinken, by two editors. GoodDay (talk) 21:43, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

Dates of Rank

Many seniors United States Military officers from World War II have a section in their article listing dates of Rank. I Recommend such be added to Mr Austins Page. Wfoj3 (talk) 18:11, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

Wfoj3, Can you provide an example? I don't know what you mean by "dates of rank". AleatoryPonderings (???) (!!!) 18:27, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

certainly Admiral Nimitz — Dates_of_rank or General (later President) Eisenhower — Promotions below is purely theoretical - utilizing my knowledge; perhaps dated; of Typical length of service of officers in each paygrade (basis for year - month and days are Pure guesses.

Wfoj3: Thanks for clarifying. I'm not opposed to including it if you have sources for every entry. I am always a little hesitant to include lists like these if they're already in the prose, but if it's sourced and included in analogous articles, I suppose there's no reason not to drop it in. AleatoryPonderings (???) (!!!) 23:07, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

I only have a source for the Lieutenant general.- I copied table format from IKe. Wfoj3 (talk) 23:31, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

Wfoj3, Got it. Feel free to add once you have sources. AleatoryPonderings (???) (!!!) 23:44, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

Army official portrait

I think this photo does not add encyclopedic value, since we already have an official portrait in the infobox and many, many other photos of Austin in uniform. Neovu79 disagrees. I leave it to the community to decide whether this photo stays or goes. AleatoryPonderings (???) (!!!) 00:57, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

Seems fair to me. If the community say differently, I'm fine with that. Neovu79 (talk) 00:59, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

Improvements to the article

I am willing to help on this article. I am also willing to expand the lead section and improve shorter areas of the article. Is there anything I can do to help improve the article? Also, what are some things I can talk about in the lead section? --AlabamaFan101 (talk) 06:54, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

Who is this in reference too? It should either be removed or moved to a place where it is clear who it is referring to. 47.221.159.19 (talk) 19:15, 20 December 2021 (UTC)

Article too long and irrelevant info

Does anyone else feel this article is way too long, especially given this man’s relatively low prominence compared to other politicians? Moreover, his “Secretary of Defense” section basically reads like an advertisement with endless positive quotes in there. Wikentromere (talk) 11:45, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

It says he was preceded by Mark Esper, yet the were two people in that role between him and Esper. Being a page government official, it is locked from editing. Page needs to be corrected by an authorized account. 2600:6C5C:6D00:4C4:9407:B4FF:4B5D:61EB (talk) 02:54, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
