Book of Llandaff

A reference to the Book of Llandaff has been removed. The bishops resided at Mathern in their diocese until the mid eighteenth century. Only a few stones remain from the Italianate Temple and if visible are not in situ----Clive Sweeting

The reference to the Book of Llandaff has not been removed, it has been transferred to Diocese of Llandaff because it was more relevant to that article. This have been noted in the history. Walgamanus 10:43, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

SW tower and the Great Storm of 1703.

Can anyone provide a reliable source or a Cathedral document on the Great Storm of 1703? I note there is a local source saying the "The battlements of the north-west tower of Llandaff cathedral collapsed" and numerous sources mirroring wikipedia. We hope, I suspect that like me you have both Welsh and coal mining roots. I now live in Leicester but would dearly love to find out more about the 1703 storm damage. Lay Clerks Entry

This entry is now far too long and far too detailed and now has a significant number of '????' entries. The opening pages of this page should surely just list people past and present in very senior positions. To have a major section on Lay Clerks is questionable but to split the list into detailed sub-sections is totally disproportionate. It is also a concern that the entry has been made without the knowledge of the Director of Music, The Cathedral Administrator or the Cathedral Clergy. I would ask that the originator reviews this entry as it now looks very amateurish.

The entry certainly needs revision as it contains a considerable number of omissions and also inaccuracies such as denoting Singing Men etc as Lay Clerks. The limited number of Lay Clerk posts and the length of service of many, means that even a complete list since 1950 is relatively small and does not require an extensive entry. However, it would be churlish to ignore the considerable contribution to the life of the Cathedral made by her professional Lay Clerks, many of whom served faithfully for several decades. Historically, it also seems fitting to mark the end of Wales' only professional lay-clerk establishment as the Cathedral moves into a different era. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.172.81.18 (talk) 01:33, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

• "the damage to the cathedral was so extensive that the church seriously considered removal of the see" - link Episcopal see here, as I didn't know what this meant!
• "the cathedral was severely damaged when a parachute mine was dropped blowing the roof off the nave" - this is a run-on. Try a semi-colon in between "dropped" and "blowing"
• "The cathedral was dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, St. Dubricius, St. Teilo and St. Oudoceus" - no full stops in "St" for British English. I don't mind if you ignore this as it's extremely pedantic! Maybe something to bear in mind for FAC
• "Sir David ap Mathew was 'Grand Standard Bearer of England'," - double quotes needed
• "granted under King Edward IV" - link Edward IV of England
• "for saving his life at the Battle of Towton, 29 March 1461 (War Of The Roses). [29]" - extra space before the citation. Also, I think this might sound more fluid as for saving his life at the Battle of Towton, as part of the War Of The Roses. (link War of Roses too)
• "Wood produced an Italian Temple" - does temple need to be capitalised?
• "attempt to transfer the see-this time to Bristol" - em dash needed
• "Edward VII, then Prince of Wales and the Marquess of Bute were among those" - Edward VII (then Prince of Wales), and the Marquess of Bute were among those
• "On the evening of 2 January 1941 during the Second World War the cathedral was severely damaged" - comma needed between "War" and "the"
• "and there was also damage to the organ" - delink organ here, as it's already been linked
• "Construction began of grander building under the orders" - a grander

Excellent work with this! I was keeping an eye on it when it was being written. I checked the majority of the references I could check as I went along, and I couldn't find any issues with that either. There is no major close paraphrasing, so that's looking good. Some of the suggestions I made were minor; like the full stop after "St" can definitely be ignored, but it's worth considering if you're planning to send this to FAC. Welsh or English name?

What's preferred here-the Welsh name as the article has had since it was started or the English name? We hope (talk) 18:57, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

• Welsh-This is a Welsh cathedral and the denomination is The Church in Wales. In 1920, The Church in Wales became independent from the Church of England. We hope (talk) 18:57, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

Bear in mind that changing this would likely mean changing the names of all Church in Wales articles and needs consensus. We hope (talk) 19:02, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

The full name ought to be included somewhere. I have no objection whatsoever to the Welsh name being included too. I removed the Welsh name from the infobox because I thought displaying two names there looked clumsy, and I didn't expect anyone to object since the Welsh name was already given in the first sentence.
