Transliteration error[edit]

The mottos for Université Libre de Bruxelles and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Scientia vincere tenebras may be better translated as "To conquer darkness by knowledge" "Vincere" is the infinitive, or the "to" form, and "scientia" translates as "knowledge." — Preceding unsigned comment added by JohnMc (talkcontribs) 14:50, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Taking any random Latin inscription...[edit]

It seems that some of the "mottos" of universities listed here are actually their names in Latin. And I seriously doubt that "Hauptsach, gudd gess!" is the motto of any university. It seems to be a saying in Saarland, but listing it here looks like a joke. I added an {{unreferenced}} tag to the page. up+l+and 09:00, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this is certainly a very rough draft, and should not be regarded as authoritative. Someone with a little knowledge of Latin and some time for research could do a lot to improve the page. Ideally, each motto should be linked to an authoritative source that documents its authenticity. Some read like Babelfish translations (National Polytechnic Institute); others are just Latin versions of the university's name (Universidad de Córdoba). RJO 00:49, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Transliteration error[edit]

List_of_university_mottos#South_Korea I noticed the following transliteration error:

  • 그대 서강의 자랑이듯, 서강 그대의 자랑이어라
  • (Sogang gudae-e jarang e dut, gudae Sogang-ui jarang e o ra)

A better transliteration would be:

그대 서강의 자랑이듯, 서강 그대의 자랑이어라
Gudae sogang-ui jarang e dut, sogang gudae-ui jarang e o ra

The two phrases were swapped. Unfortunately, my korean isn't all that good. I'm not sure if the hangul or the original transliteration is correct. Rival (talk) 15:46, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have you seen this motto?[edit]

I looked through the list, but I could not find the motto I was looking for that I found back in December. The university motto had four Latin words separated by a comma in the middle and a photograph of the seal that looked like it was made of copper. 98.203.202.34 (talk) 00:12, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Durham University[edit]

Why is it first on the UK list? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.104.40.70 (talk) 02:06, 25 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

University of Southern California[edit]

was "Let him who deserves it bear away the palm" changed to "Let whoever earns the palm bear it"

This is the designation given on the usc.edu page and the USC wikipedia page. http://www.usc.edu/about/factbook/uscbasics.html

(1884) The University of Southern California’s original seal was developed in 1884 to emboss the diplomas of the school’s first graduating class. This seal depicted the year of USC’s founding (1880) emblazoned on a scroll next to a palm tree (in heraldry, a symbol of righteousness and victory), with the name of the institution inscribed around the border. (1908) At the behest of university administrators in 1908, Jesse Ray Miller devised a new seal that introduced USC’s official flower, the California poppy, a heraldic symbol of remembrance, hope, joy and growth. The seal also included a shield bearing a setting sun and three torches. In heraldic tradition, the torch symbolizes learning, and the three torches displayed here represented learning in the arts, the sciences and philosophy. The sun signified the West and, according to heraldic symbolism, power and life. Finally, enfolding the shield was a scroll displaying the university’s new motto, “palmam qui meruit ferat.” (1948) USC Board of Trustees approved an updated version of the university seal. In this version, the poppies appear next to the shield inside of the outer band, which is now formatted as a scroll, and the Latin motto is emblazoned on a separate scroll at the base of the seal. This seal continues to be the imprimatur, or official signature, of USC to this day. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.151.124.33 (talk) 22:59, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Moving to "List of college and university mottos"[edit]

I am renaming this article "List of university and college mottos", to mirror titles like Lists of universities and colleges by country, College and university rankings etc.; the article already has about 100 colleges listed. I feel this is uncontroversial enough for me to be WP:BOLD.-Ich (talk) 16:39, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
