Untitled[edit]

If this page is going to include rugby, cricket, athletics stadiums etc. as well as football, I don't think it needs to list all the stadiums on List of English football stadiums by capacity - a lower limit of say 15,000 capacity might be about right. Also, I don't think it's that useful to combine current and future stadiums into one table, especially since some of the future stadiums are just ideas at this stage, and may never happen. The two Liverpool football stadiums in particular have been in development hell for years. — sjorford++ 11:41, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

If, as it says in the article "The criteria for entering this list is the ability for a game of football to be played on the pitch." the name should reflect this. Either that or it should include all stadia. Nuttah68 15:20, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Improvements to this list[edit]

I've made a start on the top of the list; ideally I would like the entire list to look like the over 40,000 section but that will take a little time. :) There are a lot of other ways this article could be improved:

  • Making sure all major sports stadiums are included, not just football.
  • Setting some sort of minimum capacity for inclusion on the list; how does 10,000 sound?
  • Removing stadiums that are planned and putting them into a separate section.

Planned stadiums should definitely be put in a different section, and they should only be included in that if they are actually under construction to avoid crystal-balling e.g. Everton are merely "investigating the possibility" of a move, and that 55,000 figure relates to a plan abandoned in 2003. OK, I've moved them out. Any thoughts on my suggestion to enforce a 10,000 minimum. It seems a sensible cutoff point as there are hundreds of stadiums between 3,000 and 10,000 and it would make maintaining this list very hard, as it is. Qwghlm 11:23, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
10,000 seems sensible, but I'm not sure, mainly because I'm having trouble estimating how many facilities over 3,000 exist in England. The football list contains 151, plus all major cricket grounds, the first couple of tiers of each rugby code, several athletics tracks, maybe some speedway? Does a Velodrome count as a stadium? Perhaps a 10,000 limit, and change the title to something like "List of sports facilities in England" to encompass both indoor and outdoor sports? Oldelpaso 19:11, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Right, I've trimmed the stadiums with fewer than 10,000. There are some more stadiums I need to add in - tennis and hockey venues I need to go over as well. Good work on the referencing, btw. Qwghlm 17:06, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd better explain my referencing. For the ones I've done so far (football + Super League rugby) I've used each club's official website where it gives an exact figure, but not in cases where it is stated to the nearest 1,000 or 500. In the absence of any official data, I've used the BBC, but in some cases the figures are clearly out of date (Charlton and Wigan have had higher attendances this season than the BBC stated capacities for their grounds) and so these may not be completely accurate. I'm suprised how many club websites so not state the capacity. The most extreme example is the site of the Liberty Stadium which gives detailed stats about everything else, but not the capacity. The referencing odyssey continues. The Football League's site has exact figures for some which were missing references, the figures look to be on the whole fairly reliable, but again there are some inconsistencies; Elland Road is quoted as 39457 by the FL [1], but Leeds had a couple of crowds over 40,000 in 2003-04 [2]. Cricket grounds[edit]

Finding non-vague references for cricket ground capacities is proving tricky. Several Test grounds install temporary seating for international games, I suspect that the capacity varies from Test to Test. Oldelpaso 17:24, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rising to...[edit]

A few entries say "Rising to xxxx" or "planned expansion on hold" etc. I'm removing those which have no concrete plans in place (no pun intended). Expansion of Upton Park was planned seven years ago [3], but has long since been shelved. Aston Villa got planning permission for an expansion to 51,000 in 2000[4], but planning permission usually only lasts 3-5 years. Boundary Park's mooted expansion has not yet had a planning application submitted, no news since Feb 2006 [5]. Oldelpaso 16:03, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
