Content[edit]

Many of the links here are external only links. Wikipedia is not a mirror or a repository of links, images, or media files. I for one, think that this should only have internal links. --rogerd 01:11, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Rogerd; however; before removing the external links we should may pages for each of the trails in question. They could just be stubs with the one external link on each page. --Ray 12:49, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I too agree. I also feel that links should only go to articles about the trail in question. Not to articles about railroads that the trail runs on, or rivers that they run next to. --Cranor 15:53, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is valuable to have a list of all the rail trails. Having only external links for many of them may not be best, but its not like they're links to fan sites, which is what the policy is ment to discourage. Also I think its time for the W Va list to get moved to its own article, unless the idea is to list every rail trail here.

Would turning the external links into in-line references and gathering all the links in a "Footnotes" or "Reference" section be a better way to handle worry about WP:NOT WVhybrid 04:27, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. Internal links will link to lots of short articles which some people dislike. Can't have it both ways or can we? Which ever way, this list should try and be ever more complete. Tabletop (talk) 04:44, 25 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tabletop - Notice the comment above yours is a year prior to your comment. There have been significant changes since that comment was posted, that bring the article more in line with wikipedia expectations. I agree with you the list could be more complete. List of trails without articles[edit]

I just added a bunch of trails from the rail-to-trails website which probably don't currently have articles on Wikipedia. Is this article intended to be a list of all trails or just those with articles on Wikipedia? Michael A. White 00:07, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I did the same thing with trails in Minnesota earlier today. As long as the trails used to be part of a railroad, I'd say it's fine. It might spur people to write articles about those trails, in fact. I don't know if there's a notability standard for trails, but I'd probably omit something like a one-mile trail around a city park. On the other hand, anything that's named and has a significant enough length probably deserves mention. --Elkman 04:04, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rail Trail infobox?[edit]

Wikipedia:Red link[edit]

This page has had a lot of red links converted to external links, which while very resourceful is not exactly the correct approach. Please take a look at Wikipedia:Red link to learn more about red links. The appropriate correction for a red link is to follow it to the non-existent article and then create a new article based on the three core principals of Wikipedia Wikipedia:Verifiability, Wikipedia:No original research and Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copyright violations so you will not be tempted as many new editors are to copy and paste articles in to Wikipedia. I have made corrections to some the red links on the section List_of_rail_trails#Washington but there are several more that need to be addressed. Separate pages for some states[edit]

I would find the list more usable if all of the trails for all the states in the US were on one big page; the page up/page down keys on my keyboard or the scroll ring on my trackball can navigate through one big page faster than I can visit 50 different pages. If there's a desire to break things up, perhaps having a list of rail trails _in the US_ as a single page would make sense. JNW2 01:58, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Information about trails on this page[edit]

I would like to see the length of each trailed mention on this page, and the city/town at each end of the trail. (The latter seems to have been done already for Massachusetts.) Listing the intermediate cities/towns on longer paths might also be nice; on the other hand, I also think the list will be more readable if most trails in this list only take up one line, given a reasonable font size and a reasonable screen width (1024 pixels, perhaps). Rail trails in Hawaii[edit]

This article currently does not have any reference to any rail trails in Hawaii, and there was indeed a railroad along part of the south shore of Oahu, part of which has been converted to a bike path. Much of the length of the Pearl Harbor Bike Path mentioned at [1] is a rail trail, and other parts of that railroad may have been used to build other bike paths. List of pipeline trails[edit]

Hey Tabletop, thanks for the input on List of rail trails. I haven't deleted the sections on canals and pipelines - although my finger hovers over the delete key. By rights they shouldn't be there. The fact that they are trails softens my hard heart - for the moment. Long term I don't think the pipeline trails or canal towpath trails topics are that noteworthy. There may be a general topic of reuse, recycling or multiple-use infrastructure in which these features could be described. If you believe the list articles are notable create the articles and ask for help in expanding them if you need it WP:BOLD. A fishing pier is not a trail and the bridge was a road bridge not a rail bridge so that one can't go in the article and doesn't bear the same consideration as the pipeline or canal towpath trails. More generally, there should perhaps be List of recycled infrastructure of which the List of rail trails is a high frequency special case. The towpaths, pipeline paths and one example of a converted pier do not necessarily have enough examples to justify a file of their own, but there should be at least a See also cross reference. Australian/Victorian trails[edit]

I removed a couple of trails. The Upfield Bike Path has never been called the Upfield Rail Trail and doesn't follow the definition of being constructed on a disused railway. I don't know whether Belgrave Rail Trail is the correct name, but it also only follows a working rail line. Railtrails Australia include it but call it Belgrave Railway Trail. Another odd case (not included here) is what Monash Council call the Waverley Rail Trail, which once again only follows an existing line. ☸ Moilleadóir ☎ 16:33, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

North Idaho Trails[edit]

This article was the subject of an educational assignment that ended on 15 December 2010.

I see that the Bill Chipman Palouse Trail is listed in Idaho, but the page is missing. I propose to add the page.
