Ben Curtis[edit]

I am fully aware of the references to Ben Curtis saying he's from Kent, Ohio and that he was building a house there. That still doesn't mean he actually lives there and since we have articles on both Kent and Franklin Township, Portage County, Ohio, yes, we can be precise. The property listing for the Curtis house is located in Franklin Township, outside the city of Kent. It is very common for people who live in Franklin Township to say they're from Kent and for the local media to refer to it as Kent (especially using a source from Cleveland) since Franklin Township has the same school district and ZIP code as Kent (i.e. the same community), is adjacent to Kent, and obviously Kent is the much better known entity. After winning the British Open, Curtis also stated he was "from Kent, Ohio" even though, at the time, he was living in Stow, Ohio. --JonRidinger (talk) 15:51, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

An example of how sources can sometimes be inaccurate and how people generalize where they live: July 21, 2003, Ben Curtis is quoted in the AP as saying "I'm from Kent, Ohio". An Akron Beacon Journal article from the next day: "Up until yesterday, the big story in Stow was Ben Curtis, a 26-year-old Stow resident, winning the British Open." Stow, Ohio is adjacent to Kent, but Kent is better known because of KSU. The British Open was also played in Kent that year. The criteria for this list has been people who live in or were born in Kent, Ohio (and yes, that is limited to the physical city boundaries) with the exception of those who were only in Kent during their time as KSU students since we have an entire List of Kent State University alumni, which is larger than this list anyway. Curtis is listed there, at Stow, Ohio#Notable people, and at Franklin Township, Portage County, Ohio#Notable people. The article on him also states that he lives in Franklin Township. --JonRidinger (talk) 16:55, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

After doing some research, I took Ben Curtis back out of the list of people from Kent. I first read the three sources that were listed with the fact. Two are from out of town, in the kind of situation where it is common to associate yourself with the nearest city people might have heard of. Saying Franklin Township is a mouthful, especially when you then have to explain which of the 21 Franklin Townships in Ohio you live in. Kent is close enough for those purposes, it is easy to say, is reasonably well-known, and is the only one in the state. The remaining source is from the Record-Courier, which admittedly should be clearer. Even here, though, the Curtis' spoke of Kent as their hometown, which is a bit vaguer than saying you live there. Them saying that Kent is their hometown makes some sense because his wife went to Kent Roosevelt and for all I know actually lived in Kent. Basically they decided to keep things simple and say to everyone that they live in Kent. For the purposes of this list, though, we need to analyze other sources. The county auditor's page, which lists the Curtis' two properties, clearly places them both in Franklin Township. The auditor is required to be precise because this affects tax collection, voting, and probably other legal matters. There is no room for convenience in property records. So given two sources, one using loose language and one using legal, precise detail, the more precise one is the one that should count. Beirne (talk) 03:29, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
He's quoted in the New York Times[1] as saying 'I'm from Kent, Ohio.'...William 11:43, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Written less than a month[2] after his British Open win, at his home in Kent, Ohio. Another 2003 article saying he is from Kent Ohio[3]
1999 golf results that say Kent Ohio[4]....William 11:52, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but as I explained, Curtis has good reasons to say he is from Kent when he actually lives in Franklin Township, but the Portage County auditor's office would not have a good reason to say he lives in Franklin Township if he actually lived in Kent. Please also see my previous reply in regards to the NYT quote about him being from Kent since he wasn't even living in Kent when he said that. It is well-documented that Curtis lived in Stow (also has a home in Florida) until 2011, when he and his wife built their house in Franklin Township. I am well aware of his connections to Kent (his wife went to school with me at Theodore Roosevelt High School (Kent, Ohio)), so his absence from this list isn't because of some oversight. Without the Portage County Auditor listing, I would've listed him on here in 2011 when they moved based on the sources, but since I can verify he doesn't live in the city of Kent, he's listed in the article where he actually lives (and the Franklin Township article is very clear about the connections to Kent). --JonRidinger (talk) 19:33, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Additionally, the 1999 source from the US Amateur Open was while he was still in college at KSU (he graduated in 2000). The general practice for notable people lists in college towns like Kent has been that those who attended a certain school are listed in the article for the city/town a given college or university is in if they also grew up there and/or ended up settling there after college. Examples on this page are three members of Devo, Gene Michael, and Robert Cook, among others, all of whom are both Kent natives and KSU alums. If their only connection is from being students at the university, they're listed on the alumni page, but not on the city/town article the college they went to is located in. Otherwise, this article would be significantly larger. --JonRidinger (talk) 20:05, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
