Industrial Parks[edit]

How do we want to handle this? I think it's somewhat bizarre to have them listed alongside residential communities, as no one lives in industrial parks, and the municipal government treats them as separate entities. Should we include a separate section entitled "Industrial Parks", and list them (by quadrant?), or lump them in with the residential communities? --93JC 18:51, 18 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The article Heritage Pointe is in Category:Calgary neighbourhoods but not in here. I don't think its an official neighborhood (I don't see it listed as such by the city, but maybe my list is old). But, in any event, it should probably be in both places, or neither place. --Rob 23:52, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Neither. It's legally part of DeWinton. --93JC 06:38, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify, Heritage Pointe is under the jurisdiction of the M.D of Foothills No. 31. De Winton and Heritage Pointe are separate designated hamlets that are in close proximity. Hwy43 (talk) 20:18, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Neighbourhood names[edit]

This link is an interesting source of information on the names of many Calgary neighbourhoods. -- Derek Ross | Talk 05:00, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

- Im just gonna change Bonivista to its correct spelling ok

Name change[edit]

What do people think about changing the title format for individual Calgary neighbourhoods from "Neighbourhood, Calgary" to "Neighbourhood (Calgary)"? I think this style is more consistent with the way articles are names now. --Arch26 06:27, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The paranthesis are usually a mark of disambigation, and are also used for toponimy (such as rivers, lakes), while the comma convention was applied to comunities, with "X, Y" meaning "community X, inside Y". It would be confusing and ultimately time wasting to change all existing names (remember, consistency across country). --Qyd 15:09, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Industrial zones[edit]

Should the industrial zones/business parks be listed separately (as they are not exactly neightbourhoods)? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Qyd (talkcontribs) 13:11, 20 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

As much as I don't believe that our land uses should be so disparate, the fact of the matter is that they are, and calling an industrial area (as they have come to be) a neighbourhood seems almost as absurd as calling our neighbourhoods communities. I suggest a separate list on this same page.--Jrsnbarn 13:34, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Area redevelopment plans[edit]

I have started a project of indicating which neighbourhoods have Area redevelopment plans in place. If anyone thinks that this list is not the appropriate place to do this, or that this should be a separate list, please let me know and I will redirect my efforts. --Jrsnbarn 13:30, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Beltline[edit]

According to this community map, Connaught, Victoria, Sunalta and Scarboro are distinct communities, so Beltline would be an informal designation (the article currently states that those are "formerly known as" communities. --Qyd 16:59, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Connaught and Victoria Park amalgamated as 'Beltline' as of... 2003... -ish? Something like that. Scarboro and Sunalta are not part of the Beltline, and never have been. --93JC 21:53, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That is true. If you refer to the City of Calgary community profiles that they use in censuses, Beltline is indeed referred to as a specific community and Victoria Park and Connaught are no longer listed. The Beltline ARP just came out in 2006, so it's pretty indisputable. 93JC is also correct to say that Sunalta and Scarboro are not part of the Beltline and never have been.

New neighbourhoods[edit]

I have added Auburn Bay, Seton, and the just-announced Mahogany to the Community Statistics list. Obviously it's too early for Seton and Mahogany to have statistics, but Auburn Bay has been under development for at least 2 years so there should be population and other stats available now if someone wants to look them up. 23skidoo 22:38, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not until sometime in 2008 will the full (2006) census be released to the general public, so we'll have to wait another year. --Qyd 23:52, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've also added Shepard, which was just annexed by the city on July 31. (I goofed and made these edits not realizing I'd been logged out, so it came out as an IP number on the histories). Since unlike the others this community is already established (more than 120 years old, in fact), there should be some numbers related to this former hamlet although it's probable that population figures, etc. were rolled in with the rest of Rocky View or combined with other communities such as Janet (which was also at one point going to be annexed but the final map shows it isn't, yet. The annexation also shows an expanse of riverbank property to the west being annexed, possibly part of Springbank with its own community name but I haven't been able to confirm that. 23skidoo 16:07, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed that Lynx Ridge in northwest Calgary is missing from all the lists and there's no article for this. I'll try and add it when I have some time. 23skidoo 16:11, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Two other neighbourhoods that are missing (both on the list and in article form) are Silverado, a community now under construction by Spruce Meadows, and Walden, a proposed community south of Chapparal construction on which is supposed to begin soon (along with Mahogany). I added these two to the list. Silverado certainly needs an article as people are living there now. Walden, unlike Mahogany, doesn't have any official website or other material out yet, so it can probably wait. 68.146.47.196 04:38, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've created an article on Walden. I don't know if one for Silverado has been created yet. If not I'll make one as it's already well underway in terms of construction. 23skidoo (talk) 06:40, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Silverado, Calgary has now been created. 23skidoo (talk) 14:45, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Articles yet to be added[edit]

Looking at the list, there are still several articles that have yet to be created. Both Kincora (which is erronously redirected to Symons Valley) and Lynx Ridge need articles still. I just noticed that an article on Sherwood already exists so I'll add it to the list and to the template. I also believe the July 2007 annexation also took in a rural communtiy called Garden Heights (much as Shepard was annexed. If this is correct, it'll need an article as well. 23skidoo (talk) 14:56, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I haven't gotten around to Garden Heights yet, but I have added Lynx Ridge, Calgary. 23skidoo (talk) 22:06, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Also, I'm still trying to find a source regarding Jacksonport, a new community that appears northwest of Saddle Ridge in the 2008 Sherlock's map book. It appears to be primarily commercial along the lines of Crowfoot. We're still missing an article on Quarry Park, too, which I'll add when time permits. 23skidoo (talk) 17:45, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's a bit premature for an article or to add it to the list, but the city has announced here that it is working on development plan for a new south Calgary area called Providence. 23skidoo (talk) 14:30, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I just found another missing article - the community of Hanson Ranch in the northwest. It's on my to-do list. 23skidoo (talk) 14:33, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I won't be creating an article on Providence for now (see my note of Jan 28, just above) as the City announced yesterday (reported in the Jan 30 issue of the Calgary Sun) that it has put development of that community on hold pending construction of the SW ring road. 23skidoo (talk) 03:37, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some more new neighbourhoods to be added[edit]

I just picked up the 2009 edition of the Rand McNalley StreetFinder for Calgary and it shows several new residential communities that will need articles. If anyone wants to jump ahead, they're Chaparral Valley (SE, east of the current Chaparral), Skyview Ranch (NE, north of Saddle Ridge), Nolan Hill (NW, north of Sherwood), Sage Hill (NW, north of Kincora). Also, and acreage community called Garden Heights was annexed in July 2007 and should probably have its own article a la Shepard. I'll see about adding them myself but if anyone wants to jump in, go ahead. Skyview Ranch is the major addition. I have heard of it in the media but I don't have any websites or anything for it yet. 23skidoo (talk) 17:56, 27 March 2008 (UTC).[reply]

  • The northeast plan will be called Northpoint with 3 confirmed communties recently approved by the City of Calgary. One is the above mentioned SkyView Ranch at Northpoint(liveatskyview.ca), then Aberdeen at Northpoint, and Bridgeporte at Northpoint. Other future developments in the northeast is a planned community east of Abbeydale and Applewood called TwinHills but has yet to be approved by the city.User:BenCalgary
  • Skyview Ranch just opened its first 24 (!) showhomes last weekend. It needs to have an article created. There's also a Sage Hill neighbourhood under construction in the northwest which likewise should have an article done. 23skidoo (talk) 12:12, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Names added[edit]

I have added Skyview Ranch and Sage Hill to the list, as both neighborhoods are under construction. I noticed that Kincora is missing from the list, which is rather odd. 23skidoo (talk) 17:14, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

More names added[edit]

I have added a number of communities based upon the latest city map books, including Legacy, Redstone, and Nolan Hill, all three of which are advanced enough in planning to appear on maps. I also noticed that Garrison Woods, a newer inner city community, was missing even though it's been around for about 10 years; I also added Kincora. A few communities added earlier, such as Sage Hill, Skyview Ranch, Kincora, Sherwood and a few others are well under development with residents, amenities, etc. so the statistical numbers such as population should be updated, especially now the latest city census has been released. 68.146.81.123 (talk) 01:52, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The City of Calgary Communities and Industrial Area Locations should be the primary source for each "community" under the "List of communities" section. I have audited the current list with the "Community Index" within the source and have found numerous errors, from spelling mistakes to inclusion of subdivisions that are not officially designated as "communities" by the City of Calgary. Based on the source, there should be 196 communities (as of September 2010). The list currently has 205 records. I will begin refining the list according to the source. Should I run into difficulties, I will request assistance here. Hwy43 (talk) 20:13, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

First off, it appears Shepard and Lynx Ridge were assumed to have become their own designated neighbourhoods (communities) upon annexation from Rocky View County. This was not the case. They are not listed as such at City of Calgary Communities and Industrial Area Locations. Regarding Shepard, I previously made this observation here. I will begin by deleting these two and revising their articles accordingly. Hwy43 (talk) 20:32, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The list is now 196 records in length, reflecting the 196 communities listed in the city source.

In addition to the above (Lynx Ridge and Shepard), I found that:

  • Manchester is a community, whereas Alyth/Bonnybrook is an industrial area (therefore, Alyth/Bonnybrook/Manchester should be considered for a split);
  • Forest Lawn Industrial and Shepard Industrial are industrial areas, not communities;
  • North Haven Upper and North Haven are recognized by the City of Calgary as separate communities (therefore, a separate article for the former should be considered);
  • Connaught and Victoria Park are now within Beltline, which has been previously discussed above;
  • Symons Valley is not a community, rather it is a higher level of geography, being a grouping or district of numerous communities (not sure how these higher levels of geography are handled in Calgary);
  • Prestwick is a sub-area or sub-community of McKenzie Towne (as the McKenzie Towne article describes);
  • Chaparral Valley and Garrison Woods are not listed as communities in the above source or in the 2010 census results publication (if these are recently approved residential communities, this doesn't mean they can't be included... we just needed a verifiable source to confirm so, preferably from the City of Calgary);
  • "Lincoln Park CFB" redirected to Lincoln Park, although the above source appears to show Lincoln Park CFB's official name is "CFB Lincoln Park PMQ";
  • redlinks have been created for CFB Lincoln Park PMQ and CFB Currie, which are separate communities on either side of Lincoln Park according to the above source (without the " – " in each);
  • Royal Vista was within the above source but was missing from the list; and
  • Douglasdale/Douglasglen and Douglasdale Estates appear to be the same, yet recognized by the City of Calgary under the awkward name of "Douglasdale/glen (or Glen) Estates" in the above source, yet "Douglasdale/glen (or Glen)" in the 2010 census results publication, while the Douglasdale Community Info Site further confuses the naming, particularly on its "About" page (may be difficult to determine utmost appropriate name of article based on all of this).

I've also found that all three sources below the table, including the archived originals, are dead. The 2010 census results can verify some of the data, and update the population numbers as well. However, with the 2011 civic census results immenent, I will do this using 2011 data after the results are released to save from doing it twice.

At that time, I intend to remove the last three columns as well. This level of demographic information is too detailed for this list. Hwy43 (talk) 05:19, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Area section[edit]

I am getting the info from the wikipedia articles in case anyone is wondering. Also, the area can be calculated from http://www.calgary.ca/PDA/LUPP/Documents/Publications/calgary-snapshots-2011.pdf and http://www.calgary.ca/CA/city-clerks/Documents/Election-and-information-services/Civic-Census/2011_census_result_book.pdf Trfs (talk) 05:13, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
