ViSalus

Most definitely a MLM company. They offer a free BMW (lease) if you sign up enough people to also sell their product. Also involved with allowing distributors to count personal consumption as part of their 70% sales. Search ViSalus scam on google, every site is clearly associated with ViSalus. Beware of this company.

Mary Kay is not an MLM

Mary Kay is not considered multi-level-- it is dual-level. We receive all commissions and prizes directly from the company and not from downlines. We do not have "downlines"... we have teams. Wikipedia needs to gain a clear understand of what Network Marketing or MLM is.

The most credible yet still not accurate answer is given by the Direct Sales Association.

The actual answer is that there is no such thing as an MLM company.

There are only companies that employ a Network Marketing or MLM Leadership Remuneration Programme. Network Marketing or MLM is a method of developing a 'network' to earn commissions or royalties from that network.

YET they are essentially classified BY THE GOVERNMENTS all over the word by how they gain their customers - Direct Sales or Direct Marketing.

The reality is that 95% of all Direct Sales companies in the USA [and reflected nearly everywhere else] employ a Network Marketing or MLM Leadership Remuneration Programme.

On this basis, all these comments about Melaleuca, Mary Kay, NOT being a Network Marketing company are rubbish.

The statements of companies such as Melaleuca as being 'not a MLM' company' is incorrect marketing fluff. They make this claim because MLM has an unacceptable failure rate and image YET they still employ an MLM leadership plan AND state this to the DSA USA of which they are an active member. Frank sits on the DSA USA Board!

If a company claims to be a 'pure MLM' business, this means that every must join the business side. They are not customer focused and by nearly all definitions and realities, they are a pyramid.

This page should be eliminated and replaced with 'Direct Sales Companies' then add a * for *operates Network Leadership plan. OR separate by networking or not.

An excerpt from Wiki's verifiable Melualeuca, Inc.: "Melaleuca has been outspoken against the abuses inherent to the multi-level marketing model and the damage they say it can cause. By contrast, Melaleuca does not allow inventory loading (a practice used by many multi-level marketing companies encouraging them to purchase sometimes thousands of dollars worth of inventory), limits the marketing chain to 7 generations, and prohibits "breakaways" (another practice commonly found in multi-level marketing). Melaleuca also does not require its marketing executives to maintain an inventory. In order to earn commissions from one's customers, marketing executives must produce a minimal number of 35 product points per month (the equivalent of about $45–55 each month) to remain an active Independent Marketing Executive. This in turn qualifies the Preferred customer to receive a 30%-40% discount off the regular purchase price of their personal product purchases. The company also offers their preferred members an opportunity to earn up to 10% of their monthly product order back in "Loyalty Shopping" dollars. After earning $100 in Loyalty Shopping dollars their first five consecutive months, new preferred members are allowed to redeem their earned Loyalty Shopping dollars towards products."

This company BELONGS here ~ and should be proud of it! Due to their compensation plan for their representatives... it is a MLM, just different then the rest of them. See Multi-Level Marketing here at Wikipedia. "Consumer direct marketing" is how they move their product. Concur - as MLM has become as mostly pejorative business term for the business model, I would think all entries here need to be explicitly sourced. Especially if the term is not mentioned in the linked article. Looking at a few of the corporate sites, they always seem to dance around it ("build your own team", etc). I'd rather there be a direct mention of the term in a third party reliable source, though, which will be difficult for a few of the minor players here. Kuru (talk) 15:14, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
When I checked the articles, if the company website had mention of commissions from recruited salespeople, or even used the word "downline", I assumed that was sufficient verification that the company is an MLM. The companies I removed didn't have even that much, though I didn't try too hard to dig through the company websites. Argyriou (talk) 15:42, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

I don't believe we need references in this list, so long as the linked article states that the company is an MLM (even if it takes a couple of sentences to say it clearly). If the linked article does not say that the company is (or was) an MLM, then the company shouldn't be on this list. In particular, I think Discovery Toys and Watkins Incorporated should come off the list, as I was unable to find any indication that they are MLMs, as opposed to direct sales outfits. Direct selling != MLM, but that reference does include data on whether the company is an MLM or not. So, for example, #12 on that list, Pola Inc., is not an MLM, and shouldn't be included in this list. However, that is a very useful reference, and we should check through it for companies not on this list. I would think we should still not add redlinks to this list, though if a company is on the list, it's probably worth creating an article about, if verifiable information can be found about it. Yes, you are correct that not all direct sales companies use either a multi-level or network marketing method (although the great majority do now according to the DSA.) Here is another reliable industry source: MLM Insider company directory. This will list companies not in the top 100 of the prior DSN list. I've found this database to be not 100% inclusive of all direct sales/MLM/network marketing, but its fairly good. Leef5 (talk) 15:17, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
