move/Name change[edit]

Countries of titled problemists[edit]

The recent edit ([1]) has changed country of Milan Velimirović in the list of solving GMs from Yugoslavia to Serbia. However Milan Velimirović already had country Serbia in the list of composing GMs. The key in my view is the moment when he has gained the title - he became solving GM in 1984 when there was Yugoslavia and composing GM in 2010 when there was Serbia. It is the general approach of the page as I see it (other example is Jakov Vladimirov, who became composing GM in 1988 when there still was Soviet Union, although since SU breakup he is still very active in Russia. Although... Valentin Rudenko became composing GM already in 1980 and he has country Ukraine... so some standardized approach would be nice to have. --Ruziklan (talk) 16:49, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think you're right. The same issue applies to list of chess grandmasters. I haven't done any maintenance on that page in many months, but people have updated a few countries when a GM has switched federations. In my opinion that's an unworkable approach. If I ever rewrite that list of GMs I intend to explicitly specify that country is the FIDE affiliation at the time the GM title was awarded. Otherwise you get absurd results such as listing Spassky as a French GM. Today it is not uncommon for GMs to be in three or more FIDE federations over their careers. If the GM is living and the reader wants to know their current federation, they should go to http://ratings.fide.com. If they are looking for the federations they had in the past, our article on the player (if we have one) should give the information. Quale (talk) 23:27, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
