Mongolia earthquake[edit]

An earthquake of similar magnitude happened almost at the same location in 1950, see https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/iscgem895348/executive .Not sure if that is worth mentioning here? Yaan (talk) 13:31, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Numbers: table vs. infobox[edit]

The infobox and the "comparison with the previous years" table lists eight (1+7) earthquakes of magnitude 7+, the "by magnitude" table lists only seven. Which one is missing? --2A02:8070:A190:4C00:CA4:1E5:175D:E62B (talk) 16:04, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

California Truckee earthquake 5/6/21[edit]

An earthquake (4.7 magnitude) occurred 19km northwest of Truckee, California. Is its magnitude strong enough to merit a slot on the table? More info at https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/nc73559265/executive Kifernus (talk) 16:55, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Kifernus: Hello, about the 4.7 event in Truckee, it does not meet the requirements mentioned in the article lead (Mag 6.0 or greater). One exception is if it caused significant damage, then it can be included in this list. Hope this helps.--Dora the Axe-plorer (talk) 01:01, 8 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Aftershocks?[edit]

Should we actually label the May 1 & May 13 earthquakes off Miyagi and Fukushima Prefectures "aftershocks"? At a cetrain point, these earthquakes won't be "aftershocks", but their own mainshock already. Even the JMA has stopped referring to earthquakes off the Tohoku coast as aftershocks as of April 1. Dora the Axe-plorer (talk) 23:33, 14 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think we should mark them as aftershocks of the Tohoku quake and we should listen to what JMA says since the quakes occur in Japan, they are the ones who know the best about it and they are the ones who have done researches and revisions of the quake the most. Addition of earthquake swarm associated with the Cumbra Vieja eruption[edit]

The cited source states "Authorities on the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma have warned that a sudden increase in seismic activity could herald a volcanic eruption in the coming days or weeks." The rise of magma through the upper part of the crust causes lots of small earthquakes, typically forming a swarm, giving advance warning of an eruption - see Volcano tectonic earthquake. Such earthquakes should only be added to this list if they meet the normal criteria. Mikenorton (talk) 22:15, 15 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
