Talk:List of current NLL team rosters

I have recently started this list. It is very similiar to List of current NHL team rosters, and also the MLB one. In order to do so I created templates out of all the individual team rosters. One issues I noticed was that the Buffalo Bandits roster is different than the rest of the league's teams. I feel like this is a good place to discuss uniformity of these rosters.
- Also, I think we should come up with a uniform way of showing (or not showing) practice squad & injured reserve players. The MLB uses a " † " symbol to indicate IR. I like this idea. Then we would need to create a "key" on each roster.

- I am actually the one who started the Bandits roster in the NHL template and I intended to change them all that way.
- The reason I changed it was because the standard lacrosse-style roster templates were too plain, generic and unprofessional. I added a lot of other info to the page and thought a roster was needed.
- I didn't fix the other ones because I ran into several problems. Not all teams listed which way a player shoots, and some didn't list what year that player was acquired. The biggest reason why is the NHL and MLB have player profiles for 99% of their players while the NLL has, maybe 5%.
- In conclusion, I think the best way for the NLL rosters might be in the MLB-style. This would be a very good idea either way because it would really aid in editing the rosters so just about anyone could do it. Containing them as templates would also be a big help in the same respect. I mentioned the latter because I noticed a player like Matt Disher was listed on multiple roster. - Using Template:NLL roster. based on Template:MLB roster I have tested out the MLB roster as proposed. The resulting draft was in my sandbox. I definately prefer this over the NHL version. a) I think its too bulky (but personal preferences matter little, I guess) and, b) as noted above, not every team provides enough detail. The method currently used by NLL roster is WP:LAX#Roster templates which borrow heavily from Template:Football squad player. This template is used almost universally on soccer pages. So it has broad wiki acceptance and usage, which points to its benefits which cannot be easily dismissed. I like either the current method, or the MLB method presently shown in my sandbox. Before making any changes, of course, we should gain some sort of consensus with other editors familiar with these pages. --Mitico (talk) 21:19, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
- My $0.02: I like the look of the one on the Bandits page, but the extra information is frequently difficult to find. I had enough trouble when updating the rosters figuring out what nationality a player was, let alone what town he was from or when he was acquired. I think the MLB-ish one (in Mitico's sandbox) is a pretty clear and yet concise way to capture the information. I kind of like the little flags indicating nationality, so perhaps we can find a way to include those too -- the NBA rosters have that. --MrBoo (talk, contribs) 02:03, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

- I like it so far except for a few things. I think it's too wide and there's a lot of dead space just to the right of the center of most of them. How should the names appear? Some have first names last, others have first names last, some have both. How should the players in each section be sorted? Some are by number, some are by name. OK, I put the Bandits one in the way I prefer until we get a consensus: first name, last name, sorted by position, then last name (just like the MLB template). A couple things came to mind while editing, and after seeing the Raptors roster in Mr.Boo's message. I think I like the NBA template best but there are too many players per team in the NLL. So this MLB version we have will do. I'm not any good at any template creation, but I really like the construction of the NBA one and I'd be interested to see if we can implement them. The larger font sized legend with the captain and alternate captain listing in it. The injury symbol. And the layout of the template edit page. As per the things I noticed with what we have. The word "roster" is redundant. Instead of "Active (23-man) roster" and "Inactive Players roster" I think they should read "Active (23-man)" and "Inactive". That brings me to "Coaches/Other". What will the "other" be exactly, or is that just referring to the fact that the legend is there? Speaking of the injury symbol I mention two paragraphs ago, are we using the injury list or the injury symbol or should it vary by team. I think the NBA injury symbol would be better than the "†" but all of the boils down to how we're denoting the injuries. There's more that will come back to me soon. - Currently all of the players are listed in last name, first name in alphabetical order according to last name by position (with the exception of the Bandits). I guess I got lazy when I was first doing it. So now, it just a matter of: 1) first name first (like the Bandits), or 2) last name first. I don't care either way, except "last name first" would take less effort cause most of the teams are set up that way now. Regarding the injury list, I think the goal would be to keep the active roster at 23 players, meaning if a player is on the IR than he is moved off the active roster to the injury list (as shown with the Titans Matt Zash currently). Therefore the injury symbol in the key is redundant. I'll comment out for now. Regarding the redundant use of "roster" - I just stole this from the MLB one without thought. As proposed, I remove on the Template:NLL roster. (Feel free to undo). As far as the width, I am not sure what you mean, but sometimes things like this are browser related - but I'm unsure. I'd welcome you to make any changes you'd like to the template. Only way to learn is to do it. If you break it, just hit the "undo" button and its back to before you started. No harm. Also worth noting, the template is setup to also have fields for "starting goaltender" & "backups" which is currently unused. - So I tried first names first with the Wings roster because most of the players had articles. It saved 369 KBs not having the name in there twice (once for link, other for text). Hardly a difference if you ask me, but I'm still willing to make all the changes if it's voted on.
- Also, where exactly do we get rosters from? The NLL.com ones almost always differ with the actual team's websites and they both differ from ours. Jc121383 (talk) 23:59, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- "Last name, first name" or "First Last" makes no difference to me. So my vote is Neutral. If it were me, I would take the easy path. Regarding the source of the rosters, NLL.com uses pointstreak which will keep members on the roster even after a trade so its not really reliable. IMO, the teams website is the best source - however as you can see - during the offseason they are not really maintained. So using what we know the rosters were at season's end the using the NLL transaction page, we can sort-of keep track of things. But due to the nature of the league, I doubt our rosters will be accurate until December when the 2009 rosters are set - but we can try . . . Mitico (talk) 18:06, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

I just completed the East. It wasn't so bad. Oddly enough even with the prior last names first, each team had at least one player out of alphabetical order. I will do the West shortly. Jc121383 (talk) 20:53, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
