Deletion Proposal[edit]

This page is not a list of county-level divisions of China. Rather it is a list of prefectures with links to pages detailing the subdivisions of each prefecture. As such it is a navigation not an article. It should reside within the Categories Namespace not the Articles Namespace. There is already an existing category in the Categories Namespace that fully duplicates the information and navigational requirements of this page. See: Category:County-level_divisions_of_the_People's_Republic_of_China. Thus this page is nominated for deletion under the terms detailed in WP:DEL#REASON item No.13, "Any other use of the article, template, project, or user namespace that is contrary to the established separate policy for that namespace." That might work except that categories do not show up in searches, leaving no central point at which one can access all the divisions in the required mainspace. I've contested this prod. Heimstern Läufer (talk) 06:20, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
One also cannot link to a category from the mainspace, as we've done at Counties of the People's Republic of China. It would seem a disservice to readers to talk about these county divisions but not provide a link to a list of them. If we can find a better place to put this list, I'm all ears, but we can't just take it completely out of the mainspace and use the category. Those serve two different purposes. Categories do show up in searches. For example category: county level divisions. Article namespace is not intended for navigation. They have a separate namespace for a good reason. We must not allow the article namespace to become cluttered with non article pages.
You can link to the category namespace or in fact any namespace. For example [[:Category:Category name]] would give something like Category:County-level divisions of the People's Republic of China and if you want to pipe it you can do County-level divisions of the People's Republic of China. There is also a template to short cut this e.g. {{ cl | County-level divisions of the People's Republic of China }} creates Category: County-level divisions of the People's Republic of China .
This page does not talk about the divisions. All description of these divisions can be found on the pages District (China), Districts of the People's Republic of China, List of counties in the People's Republic of China etc. The later of which seems to duplicate this page's purpose in actually providing a list of counties in china. Lists, as this one is, are allowed for navigation. It's right here. As for searches, categories show up only if you expressly request them to, and most users aren't going to know to do that. I am a little concerned about the redundancy you show; however, that redundancy is not with this list; it's with the various province-level ones, i.e., List of administrative divisions of Guangdong. And List of counties in the People's Republic of China doesn't duplicate this list, as it only shows counties, not county-level districts or cities. However, this article does not contain a list of List of county-level divisions of China. It is a list of provinces linked to lists of counties within each province. If you think an article of this title should exist then surely you can see that the current content of the article is not what the title describes. Rincewind42 (talk) 09:55, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Then perhaps it would be better to rename it to use the plural "lists"? This would be similar to the existing Lists of lunar eclipses, Lists of universities and colleges and the like. Heimstern Läufer (talk) 10:12, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
