Notes[edit]

we could do with more notes about this: county boroughs are obviously included with the counties, but does Lincoln count towards Lindsey's population, and where does York get accounted? Morwen - Talk 09:14, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The data is taken directly from the census database without any further calculation. It is drawn from "Total persons" against "Counties" (no county options or descriptors were available). I can drill down to county, local government district, wards and enumeration districts to learn how the figures were arrived at. By doing this I see that Lincoln CB is counted as part of Kesteven and York as part of the West Riding. I do not have access to notes on the geographic methodology of the 1971 census (as far as I can tell). But as it is not that old perhaps they can be accessed in a half decent library? Are you sure Kesteven, not Lindsey! It was usually associated with the latter. It would also be good to have List of administrative counties and county boroughs of England by population in 1971 if you could manage that. Morwen - Talk 13:22, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely. Here is the drill-down data:

LINCOLN C.B. 74270
BOURNE U.D. 6466
GRANTHAM M.B. 27944
SLEAFORD U.D. 7977
STAMFORD M.B. 14663
EAST KESTEVEN R.D.	21089
NORTH KESTEVEN R.D.	43656
SOUTH KESTEVEN R.D.	17529
WEST KESTEVEN R.D.	18955

It will be reasonably easy to produce admin counties / county boroughs and without the need to do any calcs. MRSC 13:47, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ace. (I presume also Teesside is North Riding?) Morwen - Talk 14:18, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it is. I am going to start by constructing the admin county table. MRSC 14:32, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Further reading[edit]

It appears the 1971 data was later aggregated to match the 1974 boundaries and published by HMSO in 1976. I think I will be able to get access to this data. It would be good to show a comparison of population, using the same data set, before and after the changes. MRSC 12:52, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That would be excellent for comparison. Morwen - Talk 13:26, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
