Edit explanation[edit]

I deleted the following sentences:

"While Woods was younger, Nicklaus actually achieved the career slam in the same number of attempts (4.50 average) when factoring his amateur years and professional years. As a professional, Nicklaus achieved the career slam in a fewer number of attempts with a 2.50 average vs. Woods at 3.00."

from the "Records and Trivia" section of the article, because it is both obscure and wrong. The "averages" cited are not explained, and I've never seen them cited elsewhere in my decades of following Jack's career.

And whatever they are supposed to represent, the assertion that Jack achieved the career slam in fewer attempts is simply wrong.

Jack completed the career grand slam at age 26, in his 5th full season as a pro, his 10th year of playing majors overall, his 19th major as a pro, and his 27th major overall.[1]

Tiger completed the career grand slam at age 24, in his 4th full season as a pro, his 6th year of playing majors overall, his 15th major as a pro, and his 21st major overall.[2]

There is no possible manipulation of those numbers that says Jack did it in fewer attempts than Tiger. Jack's career was magnificent, and there is no need to inflate it with bogus stats. Davexvi (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 22:39, 15 April 2013 (UTC) Davexvi (talk)[reply]

Ohio Open and Jerry Ford Inv.[edit]

Inclusion of events in professional wins section:

Questions to ask: was the event a professional tournament (did it offer prize money) and was it a notable event? If yes to both, include it on pro wins list. We are not bound by any "official" site Nicklaus's or the PGA Tour's or the World Golf HOF or any other as to what to include or exclude.

The Ohio Open was a professional event - Nicklaus won it as an amateur. State opens are generally notable, several were early PGA Tour events. - Include.

Jerry Ford Invitational was a pro-am so a professional event, $25,000 purse in 1977. It was a notable tournament - lots of references to each year's event on the tournament's web page. - Include.

Charity events should not be included hence Nicklaus gave the money to charity. Would he have given away his Open prize money I doubt it. This event is not listed on Nicklaus career section on his media Tour guide on the PGA Tour — Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.167.167.122 (talk) 17:26, 6 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It was not a charity event but it did give money to charities as does almost every other pro tournament. Nicklaus donated his winnings back to the tournament - it was a goodwill gesture - he probably wanted the tournament to succeed and continue. Players donate all or some of there earnings from official and unofficial tournaments all the time (see Tiger Woods and the Hero World Challenge, Ryo Ishikawa in 2011, etc). JFI wins are listed on some PGA Tour players profiles (Bob Murphy, Jim Colbert, J.C. Snead), but not others - it just proves that the tournament was notable. That is just your opinion to include them. The hero world challenge is totally different as it offers World ranking points. I am a golf statistician. You missed the point entirely - I was responding to you comment about Jack's donation of his winnings, not comparing the tournaments involved. Not my opinion - the Ohio Open has been on the list since this page's creation. The JFI was added to the list recently (not by myself) and is a rightful addition - professional, notable win.
