List purpose[edit]

Please state your positions here. mikka (t) 21:36, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

There is clear definition on the to of the page: "The battles on this page are organized by country, that is, by the present location of the battlefield, not by the countries which participated in the battle." I corrected the list according to the definition. What is wrong?
A lot of mistakes are still there, however. I find it senselessly to correct them in such a hostile environment. Anyway everything will be reverted by a well known group of people. Hopefully the arbitration commity will pay attention to such facts.--AndriyK 10:35, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
"A lot of mistakes": Yes, that's why I asked this question. Neither your nor previous version fit the definition in full.
Anyway, IMO this article is dead-born. There are already hundreds of battles in wikipedia, and thousands to go, so this list is doomed to be hoplessly incomplete. Well, whatever. mikka (t) 07:06, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
At least I corrected several mistakes. What was the reason to revert?--AndriyK 15:24, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, this list will always be incomplete. It's still interesting though =) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.146.101.24 (talk) 04:57, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Australia[edit]

As an Australian I can tell you that Australia has never had a land battle for our very short history, so their is no need to have a Australia section in this list Aussie King Pin 22:21, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What about Darwin? It was an attack by air so no different from Battle of Midway or Battle of Perl Harbour. Would you accept that as an Australian battle? Wundermac (talk) 00:23, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As another Australian I can tell you it is embarrassing when lists like these include the most trivial skirmishes that took place (and on land that has long since been independent), while far more significant battles are not mentioned for other countries. AfD[edit]

This article survived AfD, the discussion can be found here. Yanksox 20:03, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New Discussion[edit]

A discussion has been started at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Countries/Lists of countries which could affect the inclusion criteria and title of this and other lists of countries. Editors are invited to participate. Pfainuk talk 13:37, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Palestine[edit]

Is an empty category. It can be deleted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.151.46.50 (talk) 08:56, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Absurdly incomplete[edit]

It is astonishing how many really famous battles are skipped in this list. I just went through for France, where such major battles as Rocroi, Malplaquet, and the Marne, among others, somehow managed not to be listed here. What's the point of this list if it can't even manage to include such important battles as these? john k (talk) 05:40, 3 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Battles of unknown location[edit]

Battle of the Altai Mountains[edit]

Where should I put this battle, it is unclear in which country it happened. Maxime12346 (talk) 00:31, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Siege of the fortress at Muluccha[edit]

I have troubles finding the location of this battle also. Help would be appreciated. Maxime12346 (talk) 00:41, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Battle of the Pelorus[edit]

Additionally, it is unclear where the battle of the Pelorus happened. The location of this battle is to be determined. Maxime12346 (talk) 20:45, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Battle of the Abas[edit]

The location of this battle is also to be determined. Maxime12346 (talk) 20:46, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Battle of Carrhae (296)[edit]

Yet another battle with an unclear location. I also hope someone could help me find where it happened. Maxime12346 (talk) 00:25, 28 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Battle of Singara (344)[edit]

Where exactly is Northern Mesopotamia ? Is it in Turkey or in Iraq ? Maxime12346 (talk) 00:30, 28 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Maxime12346, you do not need six sections for the same copy-pasted question. The siege at Muluccha took place in Morocco, while the Pelorus is located in Georgia, and Singara is likely Iraq. The rest are unknown or disputed. I found this information from five minutes of searching the internet—perhaps you could do the same next time? ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 17:58, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ouch. Noted, may you just be a little bit less harsh next time ? Maxime12346 (talk) 10:20, 13 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Maxime12346, apologies. You get rather jaded on here. Please continue your good work. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 15:40, 13 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Splitting Proposal[edit]

At the time of writing this proposal, this article is the 5th largest article in Wikipedia, and the list is probably still incomplete. Therefore, it would be impossible to fit all of the battles in one articles without any possible template issues. I suggest that the article is split by continent. zsteve21 (talk) 13:54, 3 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The deletion discussed ended with a consensus to split. By continent seems the most obvious, and is what I would support the most. Onetwothreeip (talk) 08:24, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Most splitting has still not been done, and the list is still almost entirely WP:UNSOURCED. The List of battles in Belgium was deleted right after it was split off because it was WP:UNSOURCED; this might happen to all spin-offs if they are not sourced first. Moreover, shouldn't we just delete this whole list per WP:MILMOS#BATTLESIN? I'm already working to clean up the messy category tree based on that guideline. NLeeuw (talk) 12:36, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
CFD has firmly rejected categorisation of battles by location since about 2005. But from time to time, such categories are re-created:
On the other hand, AFD often acceps lists/articles of battles by location under certain conditions.
It has been a long time since the alleged value, arbitrariness, maintenance, benefits or downsides for navigation, and the need for WP:V, in article lists of battles by location have been discussed in depth at AFD. The 2022/2023 AFD of this list barely discussed anything other than its size. By contrast, categories of battles by location are quite consistently being opposed and deleted at CFD by reference to WP:MILMOS#BATTLESIN.
At some point, these two project spaces should be aligned when it comes to organising and maintaining milhist contents. A rescoping to "Military history of X" often seems the proper solution, as the Vermont case demonstrated. I've been proposing that at CFD since April 2023, and that approach has received general support. NLeeuw (talk) 14:55, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There are 2 Bahrains in the list[edit]

Someone fix this, I am too incompetent to use wikipedia editing 84.249.93.78 (talk) 18:52, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed it, thank you for spotting the mistake Roman FW (talk) 13:08, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
