untitled[edit]

A MI-26 on charter for Dyncorp in Afghanistan crashed last december. NATO held a ceremony for the deceased crew : http://www2.hq.nato.int/ISAF/update/Press_Releases/newsrelease/2006/pr061210-349.htm

Shouldn't this crash be considered a "coalition" loss? Comments anyone? Hudicourt 23:43, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There was also an AN-32 crash with US Drug agents on board. Does that count ? Hudicourt 23:45, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would consider both to be worth of mention, perhaps following the Iraq example and making a section at the bottom of the article for Privately-Contracted Aircrash Losses or something along that vein. Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 00:33, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I moved a previously posted MI-8 crash to the "contract aircraft losses section since it was not a military helicopter, even if some Dutch military personnel died on board

Censorship?[edit]

Why did the list stop for 2008 entirely? There was a US spec-ops helicopter crash on 25th January 2008 with at least one KIA. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.83.2.98 (talk) 22:29, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I searched the usual sources and find no trace of the incident you refer to.Hudicourt (talk) 02:40, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

UAVs?[edit]

What about UAV losses? Are they not not aircraft? Hudicourt (talk) 20:00, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ismail[edit]

Qari Ismail is accused of downing a Chinook in June 2006, killing as many as 16 persons aboard - either this list is missing a major downing, or somebody fucked up. Sherurcij (speaker for the dead) 20:40, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's a mistake, probably by whatever news source you got the info from. There was a Chinook downed in June 2005, killing 16. PBP (talk) 22:36, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Aha, thanks for that - I checked adjacent months thinking perhaps it had occurred at the end of a month and was reported the next - but didn't think to check year discrepencies. Much thanks. Sherurcij (speaker for the dead) 22:46, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notability missing in lead paragraph[edit]

I see that editors have expended a lot of time on this list. Please could someone explain why it is notable and how it qualifies under Wikipedia's notability guidelines? Wikipedia:Notability (events) says: Many events receive coverage in the news and yet are not of historic or lasting importance. The Manual of Style and Wikipedia:Lists suggest that even lists should have a lead section that explains their notability. Thanks. --Bejnar (talk) 15:34, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What I see in the extensive footnotes are citation to primary news sources, no secondary sources. --Bejnar (talk) 15:40, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
News agencies and journalists are not directly involved in the incidents, so they are secondary sources and not primary sources. -- Magioladitis (talk) 16:36, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I beg to differ. News is generally regarded as a primary source, as it is very close to an event, often accounts written by people who are directly involved.Wikipedia:No original research#Primary, secondary and tertiary sources Notice the word "often". Secondary sources write about primary sources, often making analytic or evaluative claims about them.Wikipedia:No original research#Primary, secondary and tertiary sources Some reports in newspapers are analytical and look at more than just reporting an incident, and are secondary sources. However, those that I have looked at as substantiating this article were all mere reportage. --Bejnar (talk) 15:31, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
See also, Primary sources are documents or people very close to the situation you are writing about. An eyewitness account of a traffic accident published in a newspaper is a primary source. from Wikipedia:Attribution/FAQ#Types of source material, not a guideline, but an essay. --Bejnar (talk) 15:39, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
We are not talking about eye-witnesses here. Most articles are based on official press releases or information given by the US Army. -- Magioladitis (talk) 16:18, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You make my point: no analysis, no integration, no fact checking, just a report. --Bejnar (talk) 23:27, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think we disagree. Media reports can't be considered as primary sources unless the just contain statements of eye-witnesses. Since we were officially confirmed, published and not doubted they form third party sources. -- Magioladitis (talk) 23:45, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

FYI: Recent CH-53 crash around midnight a day or so ago (Jan 18 2011 I believe)[edit]

I just heard it on Fox News. They said a CH-53 crashed in Afghanistan and they do not know the cause yet. 7 were reported dead. Maybe something to keep an eye on. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.73.114.111 (talk) 00:46, 20 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

February 6: a US Army AH-64 Apache helicopter crashed with no casualties. Clearly not "Showboating"[edit]

I have not been active in aviation since 1992, however, this video appears to be looked at from the wrong viewpoint and premature.

the citation ends with --- The video clearly shows an hazardous air manouver for entertainment reasons as the cause of the crash.[2][3]

I believe that is inccorect and possibly the wrong foot to start on. Unfortunately there are numerous classic jokes about it online. I believe this one is an experienced instructor pilot trying to figure out an approach to target in the mountains. Something the Army has never done. The helicopter is approaching a high mountain pinnicle a very difficult and dangerous target to attack. The helicopter is approaching Nape of The Earth at the Army military outpost. The helicopter is nowhere near the village. In the video the village is clearly three miles away on another mountain top. I can not fathom how anybody can miss that obvious fact.

The village is three miles away on another mountain top!!!!

Then if you look carefully at the video the first 4-8 seconds the appache approaches very low (classic Nape of the Earth), and it is an
approach to a target. One of the military personnel is holding a large 4 foot square yellow target with a black diaganol x. that is a
helicopter trainging target.

in the actual impact sequence you can see the pilot is leveling just before impact trying to save the mission first. then realizing it will not work and the helicopter is bouncing up and he is trying to fly it, however he does not have enough collective pitch to fly. The helicopter starts decending towards 4 or 5 village people who are returning and the pilot pulls maximum collective pitch all the way up to the stops. Tearing the guts out of the engine and transmission. However it was a split second decision by the pilot. It does appear to be demonstrating brilliant instinct to save the people. He was flying an accident in progress away from the people at that point. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.224.108.29 (talk) 14:51, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that appache accident video is once in 30 or 40 years classic test pilot aviation safety no-no video. please send that pilot back up. I would never have been that good. I did giggle about it. Sorry - test pilot that is the job it is yours thank-God, not mine. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.224.108.29 (talk) 15:27, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(This is not a reply to the person above)

How is it that the manouver supposedly was for "for entertainment reasons"? Sources on this? I guess not. Who wrote that and why? That statement is false, and it should be removed.

To me it seems that something went wrong on the way up, eg engine failure. However the pilot wasn't high enough to autorotate. Simple as that. People shouldn't try to judge stuff they don't understand.

It's been almost a week and no comment on the above, so I'm editing the article.

Blacklisted Links Found on the Main Page[edit]

Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.

Below is a list of links that were found on the main page:
