This list should include Abdullah Al-Rashidi, competing for Kuwait in '96, '00, '04, '08, '12, and '20, and competing as Independent Olympic Athlete in '16, with bronze medals in skeet shooting in '16 and '20. Thanks for this article. My friend Nikola Girke just competed in sailing (RS:X windsurfer) at the 2020 Olympics. When will this article be updated to include the Tokyo Olympics?


According to http://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/athletes/pl/j-michael-plumb-1.html, J. Michael Plumb competed in 1960, 64,68, 72, 76, 84, 92, not 1964/76 and 1984/92 as described on this page. Today I had added a section on five-time Olympians but perhaps this should be split off into a new page since it's getting long? It's meant to be a list of people in long-competing Olympians in sports other than things like Equestrianism and Shooting, like Dara Torres and Oksana Chusovitina. One problem - I've so far found about ten rowers who've competed at five Olympics and there could be lots more. How they do it given rowing's demands is beyond me, but that's not the point. The point is, the five-time Olympian list could become real long even if equestrian, shooting, sailing, and fencing are excluded --Crabbylucy (talk) 04:58, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • check Russian version - I found at least 78 athletes with 6 appearances (for example in table tennis J-M Saive and Zoran Primorac also competed 1988-2008, not only Persson). Also there is one famous chinese shooter to compete 6 times. I used for 6 appearances althabetical order. Hi, i'm the unsigned talker from above...one more with 6 appearances is Jochen Behle (FRG/GER) cross-country skiing 1980 - 1998. There are circa 60 more winter athletes with 5 appearances! Notable is figure-skating pair Margarita Drobiasko/Povilas Vanagas (LTU) 1992 - 2006, alpine & cross-country skier Arturo Kinch (CRC) 1980 - 1988, 2002 - 2006 (26 years!), and short-tracker Evgenia Radanova (BUL) 1994 - 2010 (she also competed at summer games 2004 in cycling = total of 6 appearances). 78 athletes on the Russian language list of six(not more)-Olympics as opposed to 63 for the English language one - yep, that's a lot. I cannot read Cyrillic but perhaps someone who can could add them to the English language list? :-)

Soquette, thanks for adding Wang Yifu. I've also added Wang to the second table and updated the shooting counts from 16 to 17 in the counts table and in the fourth paragraph of the article.

Removing the five-time Olympians from this page seems a good idea. It's a pity, because very few gymnasts, swimmers, and track & field athletes get to five Olympics. But do you really think creating a brand-new page for five-time Olympians is a bad idea? Even if people from sports like Equestrianism, Shooting, Sailing, and Fencing were excluded from such a list? Or should people simply create pages like 'Gymnasts with the most Olympic Appearances' and 'Track and Field Athletes with the Most Olympic Appearances' for each sport? Create a new article ("voice" it's wrong because in italian is "voce" (voice) or "articolo" (article) or "pagina" (page)). Added the 15 remaining athletes from the suggestions above (thanks!) and the Russian list (using online cyrillic translators and a lot of crossreferencing)

I asked the sports-reference people if their extensive database could tell us how many people have competed in at least five Olympics. I received a spreadsheet from the reputed Olympic historian Bill Mallon (they forwarded the mail to him, I think he works for them as well as for Olympedia) that has 458 athletes who competed from 1896 to 2008, including six whose fifth appearance was 1906. You're right - placing 450 people in a single Wiki table is ... not one of my brightest ideas. I'll summarize the data and post it. Unsurprisingly, there are lots of shooters (80) and equestrians (48). But surprisingly, there are more five time Olympian track/field athletes (47) than sailors (37) or fencers (31).

Does anyone have a list of athletes whose 2010 appearance was their fifth? I have Tomomi Okazaki (speedskating), Teemu Selane (ice hockey), Pierre Lueders (bob), Mark Grimmette (luge), Casey Puckett (alpine skiing), Todd Lodwick (nordic combined), Lee Kyu-Hyeok (speedskating), Armin Zoeggler (luge), Felix Gottwald (Nordic), Tomasz Sikora (biathlon), Jere Lehtinen (ice hockey), Clara Hughes (cyc, speedskating), Sabina Valbusa (ccskiing), Patrik Jarbyn (alpine). Hannu Manninen (Nordic), Mario Stecher (Nordic), Halvard Hanevold (biathlon), Ole Einar Bjørndalen (biathlon), Prince Hubertus of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (alpine skiing, 1984—1994 + 2010 (!) - he easily could get 8 appearances if he wanted :)), Jaak Mae (cc skiing), Janne Ahonen (ski jumping). It will be hard for future wikipedia editors to update, but not impossible. And seriously, this list is too important for posterity NOT to be on Wikipedia. Besides, it's a simpler table - we're showing far fewer details - hey, just the name! - for five-time Olympians than we're showing for six-time Olympians :-) Btw, the list is now up to 488, thanks to Bill Mallon providing the full list of people who competed in their fifth (or higher) Olympics at Vancouver. One more issue - I cannot publish the spreadsheet Mallon gave me owing to copyright issues. He is okay with the derivative table (FiveCount) derived from it, however. I am not sure how acceptable this is to the Wikipedia community. I have replaced the table of counts of 6+ Olympians (that I compiled and posted some weeks ago) by the corresponding table of 5+ Olympians. This includes nearly five hundred names, but since it's only names, the total page size is still under 50k. I hope to modify the intro paragraphs in due course as they were mostly made under the assumption that we would only ever know the full list of 6+ time Olympians while we now the list of 5+ Olympians. I hope this is acceptable! It has taken hours of work. Oh, there is one difference between the tables - the new one has no fractional counts. This is somewhat unfair - consider John Foster Sr, who competed 5x sailing, 1x bobsleigh - he's considered a five-time Olympian in both sailing and bobsleigh. But the maintaining of fractional counts would be horribly unwieldy.Crabbylucy (talk) 06:30, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I (having eventually figured out why & how to) corrected the rowspan (number of rows) for the altered numbers of 6 & 7 appearances in the List of athletes with at least six Olympic appearances. The Multiple appearances table was corrected for these on the left side but not the "Minimum number" right side which seems to need more work. I've stretched my brain sufficiently for now-any new blood?

Qualification vs participation[edit]

Do not add any athlete to this page unless they have actually competed at the Games. Just qualifying for an team is not sufficient - this list is only for athletes that participated at the event. This is particularly relevant with the delay of Tokyo 2020 - no athlete should be added as a 2020 participant until the Games actually take place.
