Not all the entities listed here are water companies. Some of them are regulatory agencies (Public Utility Commisions), some of them provide irrigation (irrigation districts), and some are executive agencies that do not provide water and sanitation services (California Department of Water Resources). I would suggest to move all entities that are not wter companies in a separate category at the end of the article. Also, one may mention that most water companies also provide sanitation services (sewerage and wastewater treatment).--Mschiffler 21:13, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In some places, the irrigation districts are the only organizations that provide water to the municipalities. Perhaps the list needs to be renamed, to indicate that it is not just for-profit companies. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 22:07, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

True that, but I think a better way to handle this would be to assume that people would search Wikipedia using the keyword "water companies" and just to add a short paragraph explaining exactly what that is. :) And actually I work for CADWR, and we *do* have and operate water treatment plants along the conveyance system (SWP). Water companies / districts aren't just about supplying water for urban and ag, but also are heavily involved in the energy market. Historically some US East Coast water companies were actually transportation based. The specific market and history of each agency should slowly be included in their respective articles. Getting back to your suggestions we rename the article, how about a redirect from "List of United States water utilities". I still think more people will simply search on company. US Census[edit]

The US Census of governments includes a good many water companies and would be a good source for completing this list. I've added Alabama and Arizona from their database. TMLutas (talk) 22:25, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
