Education[edit]

The article states that Carrie does not have a college degree. However, in the episode 'thirtysomething women...' (Season 2), she tells her doctor friend that she had crabs in college.

Having crabs is a college degree. Wow. KiloT 20:46, 13 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In any case, her education level cannot be assumed so I removed the sentence. Koweja 03:44, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Statement about Carrie's personal style[edit]

I'm having issues with this statement: "...Carrie pays a lot of attention to her constantly evolving personal style (considering the modest income of a freelance weekly newspaper columnist, this is a constant annoyance to viewers who are unwilling to suspend their disbelief)..." The part in parentheses is clearly an opinion, and not encyclopedic in its form. It should either be removed or revised. I for one think that it should just be revised.

I am also a freelance writer, and in my experience, pay for freelance work varies depending upon the type of writing, area of distribution, type of publication, etc. From what I understand from the show, Carrie's is a weekly column of at least 1/2 to a full page of print in what might be considered a tabloid-type paper, and frankly, we have NO idea what her "pay" is, even though she is clearly very popular and has advertisements on the sides of buses. It just sounds like the person who made this statement was clearly a ticked off, or at least annoyed, freelance writer. She's in a rent-controlled apartment, which she later does get a mortgage for and owns, (bought from Aidan, who probably gave her a very good deal), and we have no clear idea of what Carrie's other expenses are: does she have to pay for utilities? Even if she does have other expenses, it doesn't appear unreasonable that she spends ALL of her extra money on clothing, shoes, and accessories. Maybe she's one of those girls that buys lots of things, and returns half of it. (I'm ALWAYS doing that!)

It's like she's living like I did in college, without of course the tuition and book expenses! She doesn't have kids, has rich friends who probably buy her lunch, etc. etc. so what the heck else does she need? She doesn't own a car, rides the subway or walks. In fact, she walks A LOT. She may only have a $2000 limit on her credit card, but really, what do the viewers know about it, other than she goes over her limit? In fact, since the viewer is getting a 30 minute snapshot into her week (or month), it's not difficult to believe that during the other 23 1/2 hours of that day, or of the many other hours of the week that she doesn't just eat crackers and peanut butter the rest of the time? Clearly, the writer of the statement believes that Carrie is spending thousands and thousands of dollars a month, when this may not be the case. Later in the series, she does get a job writing for Vogue at $2 per word... (A 1,000 word monthly article is worth $2k, and that's probably a minimum, so that probably takes care of her mortgage, so the rest gets to go to shoes!)

Anyway, the point is that the statement is inappropriate for an encyclopedic entry, even if the statement could be proven to be true, and it cannot simply because we don't know what Carrie's income/expense sheet looks like. Period. So here's my suggestion for revision: "...Carrie pays a lot of attention to her constantly evolving personal style, which is very high on her priority list; her style is one not fettered by professional dress codes or personal self-effacement. Even though she relies only upon her income as a freelance weekly newspaper columnist, she is often guilty of overspending her limit and maxing out her credit card in a single shopping trip. To some viewers, her lack of shoe-shopping self-control and overall seemingly immature spending habits might be a flaw, and her money management misadventures follow her through a few episodes of series. However, her priorities are later brought into perspective when she is forced to either buy her once rent-controlled apartment when the building goes co-op, or move out; she does finally acquire a mortgage by supplementing her income, having to take on other writing assignments to do so because she doesn't want to move..." --Chÿna 21:39, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Non-free images[edit]

This article has way too many non-free images. I request that those that are not absolutely needed are removed quickly, or I will just remove the lot myself. J Milburn (talk) 16:16, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay so I removed the ones that have their own articles. But no, it's not that this article has way too many non-free images for no good reason. Rather, this article lists way too many characters and each of them needs a respective image to identify the character in question. My understanding is that eventually someone is going to expand the text and create separate articles, like the ones on Mr. Big and Steve. Insomniacpuppy (talk) 21:56, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure that each character is notable enough for their own article (I'm not familiar with the show) but I do think that your assessment that "each of them needs a respective image" is incorrect. Unless their appearance is important (and is discussed in the article) I don't think an image is needed to display them- at the moment, the images just seem to be decorative, which is completely contrary to our non-free content citeria. J Milburn (talk) 22:21, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Exactly. I chose not to place images for Richard Wright, Smith Jerrod, Skipper Johnston, Robert Leeds, James, and Maria Diega Reyes for now because, like you said, they are relatively insignificant characters compared to others. But honestly, with all due respect, perhaps your unfamiliarity with the show is the reason why you perceive those images to be just "decorative"? In any case, I took out another image which I did not have to place for now in the first place. Thanks for the advice. Insomniacpuppy (talk) 04:07, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Still seem to be a few, but I'd rather not be all draconian and remove the lot, as they do have some purpose, I'm just not certain whether that is enough purpose. Thanks for co-operating, this is going off my watchlist now. J Milburn (talk) 09:39, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Main article image[edit]

Shouldn't this article have a main title image? Seems so bare at the top. Cactusjump (talk) 23:12, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cameos[edit]

It is odd that Valerie Harper is not mentioned in episode 27, "Shortcomings." Rozzz-L (talk) 08:22, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've added the main characters from AJLT because it made more sense to add them here than create a new list. Crookesmoor (talk) 11:46, 20 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
