Need clarification[edit]

The following questions need to be answered to determine the accuracy of claims made at various sources:

Kathy Corrigan 1964 USA gymnastics - what exactly is her Penn State connection?
Lee Talbott 1908 USA - what exactly is his Penn State connection?
One source shows "Greg Elinsky 1992 USA wrestling;" however, there is no record of his participation at the reliable sources.
Many sources state "Barry Walsh 1992 IRL decathlon;" however, there is no record of his participation at the reliable sources.
One source shows "Al Jackson 1976 USA hammer throw" as an alternate; however, there is no record of his status as an alternate at the reliable sources.
One source shows "Charles "Crip" Moore, Sr. 1920 USA track and field" as an alternate; however, there is no record of his status as an alternate in 1920 at the reliable sources. (It is confirmed that he was an alternate in 1924.)

In this context, an alternate must have traveled to the site of the Olympic Games to be available to substitute.

LEE TALBOTT TO PENN STATE. Former Manual and K. C. A. C. Athlete Couldn't Enter Cornell This Year.

Ithaca, N.Y., Nov. 11.—

"Refused admission to Cornell University as a junior this fall because of a single entrance condition hanging over him since his freshman year, Lee Talbott, the Cornell and Irish-American A. C. hammer thrower, has gone to Pennsylvania State College, where he will continue his studies in scientific agriculture, begun at Cornell two years ago. Talbott passed up all of his work last year, but this fall the faculty of the college of agriculture, in which he was registered, claimed that he failed to respond to a notice to come to Ithaca and remove his condition. Talbott alleged that he never got the notice. Prominent professors interceded for him, but the agricultural faculty stubbornly refused to waive their right to debar him, at the same session ruling out Bell, the football guard. L. J. Talbott, the father of Lee Talbott, the former Manual Training School and K. C. A. C. weight athlete, said this morning that his son had entered the agricultural department of the Pennsylvania State College, but only for a semester. In this school Lee can do a lot of extra work and expects to return to Cornell in February."

"All-American Athletes. James E. Sullivan Selects Best Performers in A. A. U. and Colleges."

In January 1911, James E. Sullivan, secretary-treasurer of the Amateur Athletic Union, named an all-America team of collegiate track and field athletes. "Lee Talbott, Pennsylvania State College," was named the best representative of the colleges in "Throwing the Hammer."

Red Links[edit]

With the policy promulgated in the fall of 2021 it is now held that olympic competitors are not considered default notable. This would seem to indicate we should not mass create links to articles on olympic competitors that lack articles. I have seen this done in other settings and lead to links that lead to articles on other than the person who is intended by the link.John Pack Lambert (talk) 19:22, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What it may seem to indicate to one person is not necessarily what it may seem to indicate to another person. Please pass judgment on notability when any new articles for the target links are created. In the meantime, there is nothing wrong with red links; in fact, red links are encouraged by Wikipedia guideline, WP:REDLINK: “Red links help Wikipedia grow. The creation of red links prevents new pages from being orphaned from the start. Good red links help Wikipedia—they encourage new contributors in useful directions, and remind us that Wikipedia is far from finished. … In general, a red link should remain in an article if it links to a title that could plausibly sustain an article.” Jeff in CA (talk) 19:40, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
