Commissioner's Historic Achievement Award[edit]

suggestions for additions[edit]

This list and its design are great. It must have taken a lot of time to create.

I have several suggestions.

(1) Add DHL Delivery Man of the Year. I assume it was inadvertently omitted, because it appears on the MLB awards portal (which likewise looks great and must have taken a lot of time and effort).
(2) Add Lou Gehrig Memorial Award, which likewise was probably omitted inadvertently, because it too appears on the MLB awards portal.
(3) Delete Branch Rickey Award and Hutch Award (and Lou Gehrig Award) from portal and list. They are not included on the lists that appear on MLB.com (list of MLB awards in 2 columns: "All-Time Winners" and "Events and Special Honors").
- If, however, Rickey and Hutch (and Gehrig) are to remain on the list and the portal, the following two awards should be added to the list and the portal (because their criteria are similar to the Rickey, Hutch, and Gehrig awards):
  - (3A) Add Heart & Hustle Award, which is "given out annually by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association to a current player who not only excels on the field, but also 'best embodies the values, spirit and tradition of the game.' Nominations are taken from the alumni of the teams, and the winner is selected via a letter ballot by the members of the MLBPAA."
  - (3B) Add Tony Conigliaro Award, which is "a national award instituted in 1990 by the Boston Red Sox to honor the memory of their former star Tony Conigliaro. It is given annually to a [MLB] player who best overcomes an obstacle and adversity through the attributes of spirit, determination and courage that were trademarks of Conigliaro. .... A special panel is composed of the media, representatives of the commissioner and the two leagues' offices. Tony's brothers Billy and Richie, and a fan, make the selection. Announcement of the award is made at the annual major league winter meetings in December and the formal presentation takes place at the Boston Baseball Writers Association dinner in January."
  - The criteria for the Heart & Hustle Award and the Conigliaro Award are similar to the criteria for the Rickey, Hutch, and Gehrig awards:
    - Branch Rickey Award: "given annually to a [MLB] player in recognition of their exceptional community service. The award is named for ... Branch Rickey, who is best known as the President and [GM] of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and as the executive who broke the major league color barrier. The award was created by the Rotary Club of Denver, and was first awarded in 1992. [==Criteria for award winners==] As illustrated by the standards set by the late Branch Rickey, criteria for the award are:
      - (A) An outstanding individual currently involved in Major League Baseball -- a player, owner, manager, front office staff, scout, etc.
      - (B) A role model for young people as evidenced by baseball accomplishments coupled with high ethical standards.
      - (C) An unselfish contributor to the community whose volunteer activities exemplify Rotary International's motto, "Service Above Self."
    - Hutch Award: "given to an active player who best exemplifies the fighting spirit and competitive desire to win. The award was created in 1965 in honor of Fred Hutchinson, the former major league baseball pitcher and manager, who died of cancer in November 1964 at the age of 45. The Hutch Award was created by Hutch's longtime friends Bob Prince, broadcaster of the Pittsburgh Pirates; Jim Enright, Chicago sportswriter; and Ritter Collett, sports editor of the Dayton Journal Herald. They also created a scholarship fund for medical students engaged in cancer research to honor Hutch's memory. The award is now presented each January in Seattle, Hutch's hometown and the site of the renowned cancer center that bears his name. The award is hosted by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and is bestowed at the annual Seattle Post-Intelligencer "Sports Star of the Year" Banquet."
    - Lou Gehrig Memorial Award: "created by the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity in honor of ... Gehrig, who was a member of the fraternity at Columbia University. It is given to players who best exemplify his character and integrity both on and off the field."
(4) Add Edgar Martinez Award to list & portal. Although it is not listed on the MLB.com list of MLB awards [1], that was probably an inadvertent omission. According to his Wiki page, "The Edgar Martínez Award is presented annually to the most outstanding designated hitter in the American League. Originally known as the Outstanding Designated Hitter Award, it was later renamed for the Seattle Mariners' Edgar Martínez following his retirement in 2004. Martinez was a five-time winner of the award."

William Harridge & Warren Giles Trophies[edit]

Does anyone know what year(s) these 2 trophies began to be awarded? I just added them to the Phillies, Rays, and Yankees' awards pages. The ALCS & NLCS pages mention them briefly, but without any starting year. Thank you. Eagle4000 (talk) 00:28, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I did a quick google search and came up with nothing. It's not listed at mlb.com, or in the awards section or bullpen section at Baseball Reference. I just did a search using "Bing" and found an Oct 2008 Phila. Inquirer article re Phillies co-owner Bill Giles having the sole duty (as NL prexy) to present the NL champs with the NLCS trophy named for his father. There was an article about the Rays and White Sox receiving it, but apparently these awards aren't wanted on this list unless it has an article, so I'm going to get back to my other editing. It was merely a suggestion, and I didn't know that these trophies were not notable enough for inclusion. Someone may want to add a note that this will only be an incomplete listing. I just did another "Bing" search and found several articles re the William Harridge Trophy. One is a blog and has a photo of the trophy (with the AL eagle). I just added the web cite to the ALCS page (as a separate section). Eagle4000 (talk) 02:56, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If there are enough reliable sources to create articles for these trophies, I have no problem with them being included; however, those articles would then need to get to good article status for this topic to pass. Since this is a "list of lists", there should not be any redlinks (which they would have been had the trophies themselves been linked, since there are no articles for them). If we do have enough reliable sources, it would definitely be a good idea to have an article, but otherwise, it's probably a no-go for now. KV5 (Talk • Phils) 11:46, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The other option, which I did not think of until now, is that this article could actually be the repository for information about these trophies. There are not enough reliable sources about the trophies to warrant them having their own articles; however, they could have their own sections in a prose-style article like this is planned to be (see here), since we do have reliable sources that verify their existence and purpose. That's a great idea. The draft of the "MLB awards" article looks great. FYI, a couple days ago, I divided the American League Championship Series and National League Championship Series articles into sections, so that each one's championship-trophy sentence is now its own section. Eagle4000, you seem to be doing a great job and have a lot of good sources for these, so why don't you drop a proposed draft or an outline of the information you have references for regarding these trophies on this page, we can discuss any changes that might need to be made, and then I will incorporate them into my sandbox. I will be moving that format out of my namespace and into article space relatively soon, so if that happens first, feel free to incorporate any valid and referenced info into the article itself. By the way, I recently was at a bookstore and saw a bargain book re "Green Cathedrals" (or something like that), which has articles about every baseball park that has ever hosted a team in the U.S. (alphabetically by city). Descriptions?[edit]

Should there be a physical description of each award? While the pictures included are really nice, I think there should be a description of the award, and perhaps an explanation of the iconography is necessary/possible. LonelyBeacon (talk) 17:29, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed removal of redundant publisher information[edit]

A number of citations in this article unnecessarily include the publisher for periodicals and websites that have their own Wikipedia article. This information has no value to anyone wanting to check or track down references. For example, publisher=Washington Post Company for references to The Washington Post, or publisher=MLB Advanced Media for references to Baseball-Reference.com, only make the article longer - significantly longer when repeated many times - without adding anything useful. Therefore I plan to upgrade the article's citations to remove all such redundant publisher info, bringing them into line with the recommended use of the cite template (see Template:Citation#Publisher). Commissioner’s Award for Philanthropic Excellence Suggestion[edit]

I just came across a new award that MLB started in 2010—Commissioner’s Award for Philanthropic Excellence. I've added it (as a redlink) to Baseball awards #Annual awards, with the following footnote: "The award was created in 2010, 'to recognize the charitable and philanthropic efforts of MLB Clubs.' The award has been given to the Red Sox (2010), the White Sox (2011), the Blue Jays (2012), and the Tigers (2013). cite web|first=Craig|last=Calcaterra|title=The Tigers win baseball’s Philanthropic Excellence Award|date=November 14, 2013|publisher=NBC Sports|work=HardballTalk|url=http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/11/14/the-tigers-win-baseballs-philanthropic-excellence-award/%7Caccessdate=2014-04-05." Proposal to remove section[edit]

Since it is a defunct award category, and has been for several years now, I propose that the "Rolaids Relief Man" award be removed from this article.
