Criteria for included events?[edit]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section.

I'd like to formalize the criteria that seem to already exist for inclusion on this page:

Criteria for inclusion on this list are:
  • Active: The event must be active. Discontinued events are excluded.
  • Annual recurrence: The event recurs yearly or less often (e.g. quadrennially)
  • LGBT: The event is primarily focused on one or more of the LGBT communities.
  • Notability: The event must be well attended, have existed for a long time, or be notable in some other way.
  • Politics: The event is largely organized to promote tolerance or to campaign for equal rights of all sexual orientations. Events that are primarily for entertainment purposes are excluded.

agree with all, except for politics. I see this as a useful list for a wide variety of things - for tourists, to demonstrate a wide variety of events and to catalog all the pride festivals. the Cherry Party for example, is not political in anyway, it's a party, but it's a notable event. Scarykitty (talk) 17:17, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I added one more criterion: 'Established.' Also, I made the sentences grammatically parallel and present tense. See box below.

Criteria for inclusion on this list are:
  • Active: The event is currently active. Discontinued events are excluded.
  • Established: It has occurred two or more times. Events that have happened only once are excluded.
  • LGBT: It is primarily focused on one or more of the LGBT communities.
  • Notable: It is well attended, has existed for a long time, or is notable in some other way.
  • Political: It is largely organized to promote tolerance or to campaign for equal rights of all sexual orientations. Events that are primarily for entertainment purposes are excluded.
  • Yearly: It recurs yearly or less often (e.g. quadrennially).

My reasoning for each criterion (keeping in mind that my intended audience for this list is tourists and event planners):

  • Active: Historical and discontinued events are more appropriate for other articles in WP.
  • Established: In order to keep this list to a reasonable size, we must exclude brand new events. Plus, brand new events are much less likely to recur.
  • LGBT: Non-LGBT is out-of-focus for this article.
  • Notable: Another attempt to keep this list to a reasonable size.
  • Political: This attempts to reduce perceived spam or the perceived commercial nature of this list.
  • Yearly: Another attempt to keep this list to a reasonable size. Periodicals and city web sites are better for weekly events.

Remove 'Political' criterion[edit]

  • Political: It is largely organized to promote tolerance or to campaign for equal rights of all sexual orientations. Events that are primarily for entertainment purposes are excluded.

I think this should not be a criterion for inclusion on this list. (I only added it because I was trying to explicate the criteria already implicitly used in making the list.) My reasoning for not using this criterion is that this list should be as complete as possible so that tourists can use it to plan their trips and event planners can use it to plan their events. --Tiger MarcROAR! 12:45, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Improve usefulness: Make sortable (by removing country sections)[edit]

I'd like to make this article more useful by:

  1. Removing the country sections (and their flags)
  2. Adding the country (and U.S. state where appropriate) to the beginning of the Location column so that it is still possible to sort by country
  3. Making each column sortable

Since the flags were a controversial subject at one point, I want to wait for any objections. --Tiger MarcROAR! 17:03, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reasoning[edit]

Sortability would improve usefulness by allowing readers to view events by date in a certain location. Tourists could plan their itineraries around the dates, and event planners could plan events around dates.

Change title to 'Calendar of LGBT Events'[edit]

Let's change the title of this article from 'List of LGBT events' to 'Calendar of LGBT events.'

Reasoning[edit]

  • More descriptive: Although this article started as a list (without dates), dates were added; and, it became a calendar. Let the title reflect that.
  • Distinguishes article: There is already a Category:LGBT_events which acts as a list of LGBT events. Changing the name to 'Calendar of LGBT events' would distinguish this article from that list.

  • Agree Yeah, that's a better title. Ncboy2010 (talk) 12:04, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Removed link templates[edit]

I removed Template:External_links and Template:Cleanup-spam from the top of the article.

Template:Cleanup-spam[edit]

Wikipedia:Spam#Tagging_articles_prone_to_spam suggests removing this template once spam attacks have died down. I reviewed every edit for the last 6 months and found no edits that were spam. Therefore, I deleted the template. --Tiger MarcROAR! 21:11, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Template:External_links[edit]

Yes, there are many links, but they are not excessive (only one per event) or 'against WP policies or guidelines.' Perhaps, this is in reference to WP:LINKFARM. (There was concern about this article being a link farm documented years ago in the archive.) However, this article is no longer a, 'mere collections of external links.' It is more than that; it operates as a calendar.

Having official websites in the table makes it more useful. (I'm about to change the heading for that column to 'Official website' or similar, and ask at the top of this talk page for help filtering out the unofficial sites from the table.) --Tiger MarcROAR! 21:11, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Corresponding list of defunct LGBT events[edit]

Since this is an encyclopedia, and this list deliberately excludes discontinued events although "notability is not temporary", this article surely needs to be balanced up by the establishment of a corresponding "List of defunct LGBT events". Otherwise we will be skewing our coverage of LGBT events to newer ones rather than older ones irregardless of their notabiltity. Coyets (talk) 14:43, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
