Coke is it! original year was 1980, not `82

The Coca-Cola History website has a mistake on it which propagated into this page: It came out in the summer of 1980 during the Presidential campaign. (At the time, I lived on the Georgia Tech campus diagonally across North Avenue from their world headquarters; and we studied this very case in marketing spring 1981). At the time in 1979-80 we were in the Jimmy Carter-induced "malaise" when Ronald Reagan burst onto the scene. At the time, there was no Internet (let alone google!), so consumer products companies performed extensive surveys to gauge consumer opinions. In 1979 as the malaise from high gas prices and stagflation set in, Coke introduced their "Have a Coke and a Smile" campaign featuring Mean Joe Greene of the Steelers.

However, as attitudes changed in the spring of 1980 with Reagan on the horizon and the A-Team number one in the ratings, Coca-Cola rolled out their "Coke is it!" campaign, which you can see here.
