It might be nice to expand the lead a little, maybe with a sourced paragraph about the distinctiveness of a woman's voice in French-Canadian culture, to show why it is notable enough to be a stand-alone list. – Reidgreg (talk) 21:21, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see the value in having this as a standalone list — I can't find any evidence that we have any other "List of [Nationality] women writers in [Language]" for any other possible combination of those variables, and I don't see a reason why this one would be more special than any other. However, we do have numerous other "List of [Nationality] women writers", but none for Canada yet, so I think it would be much more appropriate to move this to List of Canadian women writers and expand it to include women in all languages, than to deem French-language women writers a special topic of their own. Such a list could certainly retain a language column if desired, but I don't see the value in having separate lists for Canadian women and Canadian francophone women. Lists of writers gives a good overview of what set-index articles are out there. I would note that a lot of those lists are quite large and unwieldy, so smaller and more-specific lists could be useful. Even if there aren't any other women-nationality-language set-index articles, we could still have a stand-alone list article if we can establish the notability of such a grouping with reliable sources (WP:LISTN). – Reidgreg (talk) 22:27, 26 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Reidgreg: You are probably right about a short introduction. I thought my "See also" would probably be sufficient but I'll try to add something soon.

Just because we don't have any other lists by country and language doesn't mean we shouldn't make a start on them. In the case of Canada, there were so many French-speaking women with Wikipedia articles that I thought a separate list would be useful, especially for those taking an interest in French-language literature and/or in the important contributions of women writers. Unfortunately, the List of Canadian writers is far from complete. It fails to include many of the women writing in French and does not indicate either gender or language(s), although these would no doubt be useful additions. The shorter List of Belgian women writers clearly distinguishes between Dutch and French while the List of Swiss women writers also specifies the language in most cases. It might also be useful to create a list of Catalan-language women writers on the basis of List of Catalan-language writers. A few years ago, there were no lists of women writers. Now I see we have 84. Perhaps someone would like to create a List of Canadian women writers? (I usually leave "English-language" lists to Wikipedia's huge English-speaking community and concentrate instead on other languages.)
