"Critical History" = Race Card/race baiting[edit]

Removed. First, this is a Race Card. It's not "critical", it's not even a major issue. It's someone's politically correct fixation and does not reflect the views or priorities of the citizens of the community. It doesn't even reflect anything unique or unusual. It's almost an outright attack on the town, singling it out as if the demographics are ctually unusual or specific to Linton. If someone wants to add some aspect of racial issues to a thorough history that would make sense, otherwise this is a non-issue and an assault and is little better than vandalism. —Preceding unsigned comment added by FMChimera (talk • contribs) 05:51, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Expanded the historical content considerably and added a small part of the racial claims in the demographics section.

It might be worthwhile for anyone actually interested in a serious workup of this Wiki article to start putting together a thorough historical section here for discussion and editing prior to further editing of the page itself.

Note, I am a life long resident, business owner, Chamber member and ran(unsuccessfully) for City Council. My family has been a part of the town since the 1800's, actually owned one of the deep mines and still own several hundred acres, a couple commercial buildings and numerous residential and rental propertis in and near the town.

Well, as the person who had recently reinserted the "Critical History" section, I hate to say that I agree with you. When I reinserted it, I think I was more upset that someone had removed a large portion of the article without making a summary of the edit, or putting it on the talk page. After reading what you wrote, I agree that it biased more towards the "race card" and less towards history. If/when the history section gets enlarged, a section could be put in linking to some of the references from the "Critical History" section, thus allowing anyone wanting this information the opportunity to find it. So the table turns, and now I'm the monster! :(

Nah, no monster. And you don't have to be too "invested" to write about the place. Just look at our local newspaper at times. *LOL* Regarding racial issues, there's no denying things were bad for blacks, but they were bad in most places, north and south, big and small. I don't mind it being included, I just want there to be some perspective on it.
I'm going to research so I can expand the history and get the precise dates of events before I put up anything else. I'll put it here before I put it on the page. I have not yet learned how embedded Wiki links work so hopefully someone else will fix what I do and make it look better.
I'd also like to add a "Famous Personages' section, but I don't want to add nobodies. Phil Harris of course deserves note. Some might not realize it but so does Buzzy McCammon and his Stunt Show from the 50's and 60's. But these are the only two I can think of offhand. I can think of people who were sorta famous, like my grandad drove for Buzzy and raced stock cars to some success, or my grandmother who was friends with Ronald Reagan from the 50's when he was a spokesperson for GE till the time of his death, but these don't really count(like others that have been removed as "not notable"). Adding a section for just two people is probably pointless, but I'm guessing there are folks who can add at least a couple more legitimate names...

Well, I'd love to help out any way I can. I just don't want to step on any toes, really. If you want I can help out with any markup until you get the hang of it. It seems like you've mastered quite a bit, so I'm sure it won't be too hard for you.
@FMChimera: Whether this article aligns with the local community's point of view and values is beside the point; Wikipedia is a global encyclopedia project, not a tourism brochure. That said, the "Critical history" section as written did not meet the NPOV standard and constituted original research, as it made grandiose claims compared to the sources it cited and verged on moralizing. As it happens, there are contemporary accounts of Linton being a sundown town from reliable sources, and Loewen is also considered a reliable secondary source, so I've added a short paragraph to that effect to the main "History" section. Given the current length of the "History" section, I think this is more or less an appropriate amount of detail. The broader social implications are already discussed in sufficient detail in Sundown town. If you know of any sources providing an alternative viewpoint about Linton's race relations, we should include them in the article to achieve balance. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 00:07, 19 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

1963 F3 tornado[edit]

I probably shouldn't be posting this because it's probably irrelevant. But according to http://www.tornadohistoryproject.com/tornado/19630429.18.19 on April 29, 1963 an F3 tornado hit several communities north of Linton and you can see it on the map. I didn't mean to be irrelevant or unhelpful and my intentions are good, but at least I have some sourced material mentioning this.
