Bolded??[edit]

English, Literature, etc, in varieties of English[edit]

Relying on the article I added this to template {{Infobox writer}}

Prose under Personal life mentions English language in the home, English literature as a field of study, English language as a teacher, and perhaps other uses of 'English' and 'literature' that may be ambiguous without WP:wikilinks.

For example, she "graduated {Stanford University, USA} with a high degree in English. She also obtained advanced degrees in literature from Trinity College in Ireland and also from the University of London." I understand it's true in higher education that English in USA and literature in ROI and UKGBNI all refer to the same field of study, which some call English literature, and others including EN.wikipedia call Literature in English. (And that another field is called Linguistics in USA and English in UK?) But I may be wrong. Someone who is right ;-) should provide useful links and re-wordings.

Related points:

  1. "Dublin" is worth saying, not hiding, about Trinity College
  2. [Irish] husband needs a different link. Is he from Dublin?
  3. "Before writing her first book ..." --this sentence should try to distinguish activity in Ireland, Britain, and America which means that it should be more than one sentence! Then follows a huge jump to her current board of directors service for the (U.S.) National blah-blah.

Evaluation of Article Exercise[edit]

I've selected this article to evaluate for a training exercise as I prepare myself for further edits and contributions to Wikipedia.

Though the lead section is descriptive of her work as an author of children’s literature, there is no unifying statement that summarizes her contributions to the genre. This section could be reworded to reflect her varying work in picture books and novels including series that she has written for. Based upon the table of contents, Park is also a poet but this important detail is left out of the lead section and of the body of the article. The content of the article is relevant to the life and work of Park but is not current. As a living person, Park continues to publish. This currency is reflected in the section entitled “Works” but is not explained in the thematic explanation of her work. Neither the sections on Park’s personal life nor themes are written in a logical or natural flow. The coverage of Park’s childhood and personal life is sparse and unbalanced. Included in the “Works” section are two subheadings for “Articles” and “Interviews.” These articles and interviews were not written by nor conducted by Park but rather reflect those of which she was the subject. These should act as sources and not be included in the body of the article. The current placement is confusing for the reader. Organization is an area of improvement for this article. “Themes” may not be the correct term for the section on Park’s work. A more thorough description of her work is necessary before connections are made between them. Park is an author of novels, picture books, and poetry but these different types of literature are not addressed as such. I do appreciate the list view of accomplishments by book title but I believe a comprehensive discussion of her literature is needed here. Several book titles have independent Wikipedia articles with citation so these related entries may be a good place to start. The article is generally neutral but includes several subjective statements. The current state of the article suggests attitudes and preferences of Park that are not clearly cited. A lack of citation is this article’s greatest weakness. There is one biography, retrieved in 2007, listed in the references section. Perhaps, previous editors have pulled information from sources that are currently listed in the “Articles” and “Interviews” section of the main article. These links navigate the reader to articles that are at least ten years old. Sources are also not cited throughout the article’s text. In fact, only one piece of information, relating to Park’s birth is cited. Newer and more thorough articles are needed to provide descriptive information about her life and work. Little information concerning contributions or edits made to the article are listed on the Talk page. I’m concerned that the article was created and changes were made without proper discussion of such on the article’s Talk page. Linda Sue Park is clearly relevant to many WikiProjects like Women Writers, Novels/39 Clues, and Children’s Literature among others. The article, however, is underdeveloped and in need of updating and current citations.

Incorrect category?[edit]

This article is in the category 'American child writers.' As far as I can tell, this category appears to be intended for people whose work was published as children, not for children. Park's first novel was published in her 30s, according to this article. Perhaps someone got the category mixed up with 'American children's writers,' which this article is also (correctly) in? I'm new enough here that I'm hesitant to remove an article from a category without some feedback, but it seems to need doing--does anyone mind if I go ahead and do it? Thank you! Birth year is incorrect[edit]
