Name[edit]

@User:EytanMelech Thank you for creating this article. I was wondering why it was named "Levantine". Were the founders from the Levant? Is it a reference to architectural style? Thanks. Bohemian Baltimore (talk) 13:08, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I'm not entirely sure either. EytanMelech (talk) 13:23, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @User:Bohemian Baltimore. Levantine Synagogue (from the Mediterranean Levant; from the East) as opposed to Ponentine Synagogue (from the West) or Spanish (see Spanish Synagogue (Venice); the other Sephardi synagogue in the city). That is, two groups of Sephardim: those who arrived in Venice from the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century, the Levantines or Eastern Sephardim (installed there since the expulsion of 1492), and those from the Iberian Peninsula, the West, the Western Sephardim, who arrived in Venice probably as converts. @Askhaiz Thank you! I was wondering if they were from Eretz Yisrael. Do you know if these Eastern Sephardim were from a specific area or were they just broadly from the Ottoman Empire? Bohemian Baltimore (talk) 03:06, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
