More Details?[edit]

Could there be more details about the actuall council, instead of just its abolition. Things like Method of appointment, term limits (if any), noteable members, ect...

The Legislative Council of 1774[edit]

The Legislative Council of Quebec was set up as part of the crippled parliament established in 1774 with the Quebec Act. This Council continued to exist as the Legislative Council of Lower Canada when the Constitutional Act of 1791 created a real Parliament of in Lower Canada. That council effectively stopped existing under the Union Act, being replaced by the Legislative Council of the new Province of Canada. The Quebec council was restored in 1867 with the BNAA and definitively abolished in 1968.

If I am correct, here are some of the members of the original Legislative Council of Quebec:

John Fraser
Thomas Dunn
John Collins
Hugh Finlay
Edward Southouse
René-Ovide Hertel de Rouville
François-Marie Picoté de Belestre,
Joseph-Dominique-Emmanuel Le Moyne
René-Amable Boucher de Boucherville

I am not certain how many members there were. The Quebec Act says there should have been between 17 and 23 members. Most if not all were appointed by governor Guy Carleton. In any case, we can clearly see the continuity of the membership between the councils of 1774 and 1791.

Consequently, I think we should merge the two articles.

On this topic, the most exhaustive source I am aware of is this one: TURCOTTE, Gustave. Le Conseil législatif de Québec, 1774-1933, Beauceville, L'Éclaireur, 1933, 324 pages .
