Early life[edit]

Is anything known about Singleton's early life and how his personality was shaped? This would be a useful addition. Dynzmoar (talk) 10:49, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps nobody has bothered because nobody cares. So many people have suffered worse childhoods during wars, famines and poverty without growing up to do what he did, that nothing excuses or explains him. We're not interested. Profhum (talk) 08:11, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I think Dynzmoar isn't looking for an "excuse" so much as an explanation; some insight into what could have caused Lawrence Singleton to turn into such a monster. I suspect, though, that it has less to do with his childhood than some serious defect in his brain. Also, it appears that he was severely affected by alcohol. I don't mean simply that he had an alcohol problem, but rather, it seemed to alter his personality and turn him into a Mr. Hyde. Singleton was highly intoxicated when he raped and mutilated Ms. Vincent, and was again drunk when he murdered Roxanne Hayes. Again, not an excuse, but simply a partial explanation. Article issues[edit]

A couple issues with the article....it lists Singleton's first offense being the attack on the 15 year old. Actually Singleton had murdered, I think, prostitutes in the 1960s for which he received the death penalty. He was awaiting execution when the Supreme Court suspended the Death Penalty, and his sentence was commuted to life in prison. Thus the real outrage directed at Singleton was due to the fact that he was supposed to have been executed, but ended up getting out of prison and committing another murder plus the sadistic attack on the teenage girl. Also Singleton was rated as a "Captain" in the merchant marine and was qualified to skipper large ocean going vessels such as oil tankers. Regarding what drove Singleton "crazy" he was a hardcore alcoholic and reputedly drove around in his pickup with a milk jug filled with rum and water which he would drink while out looking for victims. The article references that he was released from prison for the attack on Mary Vincent, and then "went on to murder a second woman". But he article contains no mention of any first murder, and then there's the above comment about him previously being sentence to death for murder, having the sentence changed to life and being released to commit the crime against Vincent. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.189.255.35 (talk) 15:19, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
