Untitled[edit]

  • The facts and figures regarding this lake are surprisingly difficult to nail down. In fact, many references have conflicting details. The Infobox contains as much information as I could glean from the internet in 30 minutes. If anyone has further info from more reliable sources, please feel free contribute! Please remember to post your references. Em3rald 05:22, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

History of Lake of the woods[edit]

why the heck does minnesota have that little tip...there's no explanation on this page! Why doesnt the border just cut across the lake like the rest of the us-canada border??? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.170.155.136 (talk) 05:42, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Northwest Angle was overlooked when the 49th was agreed on, and the US got that little nub on the west side of the lake. I agree that it should be added to the article, I can't think of where it should go, however. Vidioman 12:23, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Enclave or exclave?[edit]

Is the small piece of US territory cut off from the rest of the US an enclave or and exclave?

"Canadian" fishing licence[edit]

Regarding this excerpt from the article: "The Canadian government offers a great deal on a non-resident tourism license valid for eight days. If you will spend time fishing in both Minnesota and Canada, you must be licensed in both jurisdictions."

Fishing licences are not in federal jurisdiction; only provinces issue fishing licences. The passage should probably refer to Ontario, or maybe Ontario and Manitoba, but since I don't know the source for the statement I am reluctant to correct it. Indefatigable 03:37, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Offers a great deal" is also POV, and should be fixed. I don't know the facts either, so I won't touch it for now. Also, I'm pretty sure there have been disputes between Minnesota and Ontario regarding fishing regulations on the lake which might be worth mentioning in the article, but again, I don't have the details handy. thx1138 09:09, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Source of Information[edit]

The Canadian Lake of the Woods Control Board (LWCB) has the responsibility of directing the operation of the dams at the outlets of Lake of the Woods into the Winnipeg River whenever Lake of the Woods is within a certain range of elevations agreed by Canada and the United States. The International Lake of the Woods Control Board has responsibility for operation outside of that range. The LWCB has a lot of information on its web site (www.lwcb.ca), including history, legislation, historical levels and more. Teffy 18:35, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Surface Area[edit]

I agree that it is hard to nail down good, official information. I found MN DNR has the lake surface area at 344,227.45 acres which would be 538 sq mi (1,393.4 km2) http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/lakefind/showreport.html?downum=39000200, the LCWB (mentioned above) 3,846 km2 (1,484.9 sq mi) http://www.lwcb.ca/permpdf/LOLLYV2002.pdf, the info box has 1,679 sq mi (4,348.6 km2), and the List of lakes of the United States by area has 1,485 sq mi (3,846.1 km2). Admittedly the MN DNR site might be the US portion of the lake only, but I cannot confirm.170.11.30.141 (talk) 16:33, 9 March 2010 (UTC) dynamic1[reply]

There is lots of information about history, governance, operation of dams controlling Lake of the Woods at the web site of the Canadian Lake of the Woods Control Board (www.lwcb.ca). Teffy 18:26, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

>>>Aulneau Peninsula — pronunciation[edit]

How is the name "Aulneau" pronounced? Do you say it as they would in French (ie /ono/)? Has it been somewhat anglicized to something sounding like "oh no!"? Or has it been crassly anglicized to something sounding like "all-new"? Whatever the case, I think the pronunciation should be in the article. Kelisi (talk) 03:15, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
