  • Long enough, new enough and within policy. The text could use some polishing but there are no obstacles for a DYK. Both hooks are good, and supported by inline citations. QPQ has been done.   • Hi, I came by to promote this and first edited the article. I added some tags to clarify information – there is nothing in the BBC source about it being the second largest festival, and I'm also wondering what the first largest festival is? Please add a source for it. The first hook is better than ALT1, which says too much, but the way ALT0 is worded, it sounds like ... that nowadays Nepali people worship dogs to please Yama? NPOV discussion[edit]

Here on Wikipedia, the lede section is designed to summarize the body of the article. It should touch on all major points found below, in summary fashion. It is remarkable to me that while a section on mistreatment is included in the body, it is forbidden to be summarized with one sentence in the lede. That is a whitewash, because the rest of the lede is 100% rosy, sunny, public relations for the holiday. Elizium23 (talk) 08:09, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Good point. On the other side of the issue, there's the following unfortunate comment in the revision history: "This is not appropriate for the lede - get consensus on the talk page before adding it again." I've learned what I can about Wikipedia through a gradual, informal process; but there's a lot that I don't know, including how a "consensus" is reached among people who are interested in a Wikipedia page. Is there a list of people who would like to be involved in reaching "consensus" on this issue? Is there a formal process? Unfortunately, the only revision or consensus process that I've seen active on this page has been what I'd call a struggle for control. ScottS (talk) 05:11, 18 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think that the creator of this page, "Captain Medusa," did well to include a summary of the topic of animal mistreatment in the lead paragraph (aka the "lede section"), followed by more detail in the "Reactions" section. I think that the quality of this page was lowered when this summary was removed. The only explanation that was given for this removal was that one editor thought that this summary was "vague & unsupported." I disagree: I think that it was explained and supported well in the "Reactions" section. I agree with "Captain Medusa" and the editor "Elizium23" that a summary of this topic should be included in the lead paragraph. The only disagreement that I've seen to this has been the statement that "This is not appropriate for the lede - get consensus on the talk page before adding it again." However, that statement seems to have been made without support, and the removal seems to have been done without an attempt to reach consensus on the talk page. Unfortunately, the comment and the removal also seem to have precipitated an incident of WP:Edit_warring. ScottS (talk) 03:20, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Original summary on the topic of animal protection in the "lede section" (of the Wikipedia page on Kukur Tihar, by the creator of the page, "Captain Medusa," supported by detail in the "Reactions" section): "Kukur Tihar is also celebrated in Mexico and Australia. A charity event in Nepal raised about 300,000 Nepalese rupees (approximately about US$2,540 in 2020) in 2017 and 2018 which was donated to Animal Nepal, and Shree's Animal Rescue Nepal respectively. The Himalayan Times reported that dogs were treated differently for the rest of the year."
    • Revised final sentence of this summary proposed by "Elizium23" on 11/14/2020: "Some Nepali dogs are mistreated during the rest of the year." This final sentence has since been deleted without consensus.
    • Restored and revised final sentence of this summary proposed by "ScottSloe" on 11/21/2020: "Animal-protection advocates continue to work for improvements in the treatment of dogs in Nepal--especially strays--throughout the year."

  • The "section" on mistreatment has only one sentence that mentions the mistreatment of dogs in Nepal, and that too citing a source from 2007. Dogs in general are quite well-treated in Nepal. There might be a handful of cases of mistreatment but these are isolated incidents and such incidents occur everywhere around the world. This is not a whitewash. This is a fact. There are several organizations and NGOs that are working for the welfare of street dogs in Nepal. The fact that you want to have one sentence on the lede (which is not even 100% true) based on a line of text in the body citing a source from 2007 is what is really remarkable to me.
