Built in 942, founded in 947?[edit]

After reading both the Wikipedia article and the English version of the temple's web page, I am a little confused about the temple's dating. Also, please see image of the info plate at the temple's entrance here. Zeta Sagittarii 04:19, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing that out. As your image, the official English-language site for the shrine, and the Japanese Wikipedia article all say 947, I'm cool with changing it to match that. I wonder, though, where I originally got 942 from, and if there's some significance to that date? LordAmeth 09:39, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think I've finally got this figured out, with the kind help of my wife, who is a native Japanese.
-> February 25, 903 - Sugawara no Michizane (b. 845) dies in exile
-> 942 - Following a series of natural calamities and disasters that struck the area in 930, the basis of this temple are laid to calm the gods (or the angry spirit of Michizane, according to other accounts) Source in Japanese here
-> 947 - Sugawara no Michizane is enshrined at this temple and becomes its patron or protective deity Source in Japanese here
-> 987 - The first festival of the temple takes place, and the temple takes the name 'Kitano Tenman-gu Tenjin' Source in Japanese here
Bottom line is: I guess the year 942 could be the one to be considered as the building year of the temple. Hope I could be of some help.Zeta Sagittarii 15:07, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization[edit]

Category:10th-century religious buildings is a container cat, but I'm unsure if any of the existing subcats are appropriate for this. --Slivicon (talk) 15:53, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
