New Satellite Image[edit]

I wanted to note in updating the satellite image that I uploaded two versions to Wikimedia Commons-- false color IR, which is what I selected to use, as well as a "true color" visible spectrum image. If anyone has a strong dislike for false color IR the visible spectrum image could be substituted. I tried to tone the IR image as naturally as possible.

The atmospheric conditions over Kili Island make acquiring imagery somewhat difficult-- only two images in NASA/USGS's archive had cloud cover below 50% and they were taken several days apart. Because of the atmospheric conditions the visible spectrum colors are somewhat desaturated and look almost monochrome. This is not an artifact of the pan-sharpening, either.

EO-1 ALI imagery is the highest resolution satellite imagery freely available from NASA to my knowledge. It is a significant improvement from the older Landsat image (which had a large seam in it) and surprisingly, even better resolution than Google or Bing Maps, which is why I wanted to take the time to update this.

I didn't think it was possible, but I found an even better image than the EO-1 product -- a NASA Astronaut-acquired space photo taken from the ISS. The image was taken with an early 2000s consumer digital camera and was quite noisy, which I applied NR to in the water only. But, the detail on the island itself is significantly better, and that's what counts. Разрывные (talk)
