Changes 08/11/2012[edit]

Kelvin Thomson is the most determined of those MPs who believe the federal government is alienating the electorate by steering too far towards "Big Australia" and thereby inflating infrastructure costs. He writes and speaks regularly on the topic; and his hand has been strengthened by the appointment of a Minister for Sustainable Population and by the arrival in Cabinet of Bob Carr, who has long expressed similar views to Thomson's. Carr has said less on this topic since returning to politics, but recently told ABC's Tony Jones that he intends to remain patron of Sustainable Population Australia. Dick Smith and others outside parliament also continue to rouse concern that Australia's population growth is too rapid. The newly formed Australian Stable Population Party claims that most Australians want little or no further population growth; yet Bob Katter is calling for 60 million Australians as soon as possible, and many industry groups, with support from economists and financial journalists, are lobbying for at least the Inter-generational Report's prediction of 35.9 million by 2050. The asylum-seeker debate, though in fact asylum-seekers are a minor part of net migration, also complicates the issue.

Untitled[edit]

I have added the important words "back in 2000" to the discussion of Thomson's giving a reference to drug dealer Tony Mokbel, since without them the later statement that Mokbel was not known to be a drug dealer until after 2000 might not make sense. I' ve added a gloss on Moreland, and a reference for the "back in 2000" phrase.

1 March 2012 - I've now moved on to the next two paragraphs and removed a misleading "previously". Also readjusted the phrasing that leads up to the next two references, so that it better reflects what these two articles say.

Kelvin Thomson and Mal Washer (on the opposition side) are the only Australian federal MPs to consistently make a public case against "Big Australia". Granted that "Big Australia" was a major issue in the last election, and that polls show 70% of Australians agree with them, I would suggest that Thomson's views deserve fuller coverage than his current back-bencher status would otherwise indicate. I have added a reference to his main web page of population-related speeches, and a bare-bones description of his "14 point plan", using exact quotations from it.

Also added a reference to the text of the letter of reference Thomson provided for Mokbel, as reproduced in Sydney Morning Herald, and removed the misleading suggestion that Thomson pretended to be personally acquainted with Mokbel's behavior as husband and father. (The letter says "I understand that Mr Mokbel has been married for the past eight years and has two children. Worked through all the articles in major Australian newspapers regarding the Mokbel letter story , and brought the article into accord with them. In particular removed the suggestion that the Mokbel story was discovered by the media.
