Why Finnish?[edit]

While reading this article, it occurred to me that there was no explanation as to why Finland should have played such a large part in Bosley's life. Was it because his wife is Finnish?

By happy accident, while in Slough yesterday, I bumped into Keith and took the opportunity to ask him. Apparently his interest in Finland stretches back to the time when he graduated with his French degree. He was visiting a favourite book seller in London and found that there had been a flood which had damaged much of the (remaindered or secondhand) stock in the basement. Many of the books were falling apart and the proprieter had placed them outside for sale at give-away prices. Among them was a copy of an English translation of The Kalevala, in numerous pieces. Bosley bought this and it was this that led to his lifelong interest. (He met his Finnish wife at a conference many years later...) At the time the only publication for learning the Finnish language was written in German, so he had to learn indirectly by translating Finnish -> German -> English !

OK, so it's Unverifiable Original Research, but as there's unlikely to be a biography written in the near future, this seemed an appropriate place for the information!!
