Date of Birth[edit]

The article gives her birth year as 1950,but an article in the Observer says she is 60, which would make her birth year 1957 or 1958: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2008/oct/26/1 . Does the author have a reliable source for her age? I am always inclined to suspect the earlier date is correct in situations like this. Melaena (talk) 01:50, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BA and MA[edit]

According to the article, Reichs received both her BA and MA degrees in the same year, from different schools. This doesn't seem possible. Can someone check this? Exploding Boy 04:42, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Odd factoid[edit]

Why the sentence "She travels back and forth as required to the United States and Canada."?? I suggest deleting it or adding why this is significant/relevant. Samatva 03:55, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It said in the next few sentences that she works for both North Carolina and Quebec's governments thus making constant travel between the two places. This is very relevent to the books she writes as Tempe often works in both places in the same book. 13:35, 22 September 2006

Novel Table Idea + I.S.B.N Question[edit]

A. How about on the table we place a small thumbnail (Cover art) of the book next the title. eg:

We might just have to rule that the first edition US ISBN is used, as the books are normally released in the USA first. Academic career

She has assisted Dr. Clyde Snow and the Foundation for Guatemalan Forensic Anthropology in an exhumation in the area of Lake Atitlan in the highlands of southwest Guatemala. She was a member of the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team assigned to assist at the World Trade Center disaster.

Novels

Her first novel, Déjà Dead, won the 1997 Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel.

The fictional heroine in her novels, Temperance "Tempe" Brennan, is also a forensic anthropologist. Her lifestyle closely mimics that of her creator. A good portion of the novels is based on real life science. Most of the techniques used and technology mentioned are things that Kathy Reichs uses in her real life job. The blood spatter analysis used in Deadly Decisions, for instance, is directly from her job. In the novel Grave Secrets she uses her experience from her visit to Guatemala to enhance the story. Reichs has said herself that she didn't want her character to be perfect and chose to give Temperance some history.

Television

The series borrows the name of the books' heroine, Temperance "Bones" Brennan. As in the books, Temperance (Emily Deschanel) is a forensic anthropologist, however, very little else about the character is the same as in the books. She moonlights as an author, writing about a fictional forensic anthropologist named Kathy Reichs. The TV series does not tie in with the book series. It includes a cast of new characters and while the books are all set in either North Carolina or Montreal, the television series is based in Washington, D.C.

Cirt: I appreciate your focus in Nov 2008 on the need for sources. However, there are now too many. They are very distracting in the Novels and Film section. Is it really necessary to cite sources for statements that represent common knowledge among people who are versed in a topic? That is, statements about which there is little disagreement. For instance, below, Dingo points out that Reichs includes afterwords to her novels; in other words, information in these afterwords is known by lots of people.

Source Problems; Importance of KR novels[edit]

  • Many so-called "unsourced" facts are from the afterwords of Mrs Reichs novels; AFAIK every novel has one where Mrs Reichs describes the scientific methods she used in her novel.
  • As a forensic anthropologist writing crime novels that were #1 bestsellers in Britain, I would class all of Mrs Reichs' novels "Mid importance". --Dingo (talk) 17:37, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reichs and the NC Medical Examiner's Office[edit]

User Ocmejered, who currently works at the NC OCME, edited the article and stated that Reichs has not worked there during the last 6 years. A 2002 bookreporter.com article refers to her as a former forensic anthropologist for the NC OCME (http://www.bookreporter.com/authors/au-reichs-kathy.asp). The fictional character, Temperance Brennan, does work in the novels as a NC Medical examiner. Thus I think the article had been mixing up fact and fiction.

Her website is currently up and running, including a biography. She doesn't claim to work there now and to my reading, doesn't claim to have actually worked there in the past. She says only that she consulted for them for several years. I've no reason to doubt Ocmejered's assertion, but neither does it seem reasonable to doubt what KR has claimed on her website biography. Kathy Reichs studied under Dr. Jane Buikstra, a physical anthropologist at Northwestern University, who was one of the first to work with police in identifying skeletal remains of crime victims in the early '70's. Mortal Remains paperback[edit]
