Exclave[edit]

Removed reference to town being an exclave as it is not; an exclave is not defined by discontinuity caused by water (this would make every island an exclave) but rather by the necessity of having to go through foreign territory to reach it. Kaskaskia is reachable from Illinois by crossing the Mississippi River; that there are currently no bridges is not relevant. 1993 Flood Photo[edit]

The caption of this photo refers to the flood of "Kaskaskia Island" but that's not right -- it was only an island briefly in the mid-1800s. I've changed it accordingly, and will notify the photo author just in case I'm wrong. --Spiff666 (talk) 13:17, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pattern seems a little strange[edit]

Hi there, I'm not trying to be rude to the person who did the math, but when I read "For every 100 females there were 28.6 males. For every five females age 18 and over, there were two males." Saint-Domingue, not Santo Domingo[edit]

In the History section, near the end of the third paragraph, the article states that "they imported the first enslaved Africans, shipped from Santo Domingo in the Caribbean." Many authors confuse the city, Santo Domingo de Guzman, with the old French colony of Saint-Domingue. In fact, the link takes you directly to the article on Santo Domingo de Guzman, underscoring the confusion. Santo Domingo de Guzman was the capital city of the Spanish colony that occupied the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola. However, the slaves brought to Kaskaskia were not brought from the Spanish colony, they were brought from the French colony of Saint-Domingue (probably from Cap Francaise), which had good connections and trade with the French Province of Louisiana. After the slave revolt of the late 1700s, the name of the colony was changed to Haiti. Two things need to happen. The name of the colony needs to be corrected, and the link needs to be connected with the article on Saint-Domingue.

Also, it occurs to me that the original author of this article probably did not mean to say that "they imported the first enslaved Africans...." Whenever "the first enslaved Africans" were enslaved, it wasn't in the 1700s. I will leave these corrections to the editors of this page.PGNormand (talk) 22:49, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
