Population Data[edit]

I've been researching the population data for Karuah, in an attempt to get a more accurate figure, and have found that the population for the suburb is accounted for in the ABS Quick Stats for four areas, being Karuah, Swan Bay, The Branch and North Arm Cove as follows:

  • The Karuah Data[1] covers only the township itself[2] and even then it only covers the part of the township west of the Karuah River. At the 2006 census this figure was 857.
  • The Swan Bay data[3] covers several suburbs[4], which are all of Swan Bay, almost all of Ferodale, part of Medowie, about half of Twelve Mile Creek and the remainder of the part of Karuah that is in Port Stephens Council. The total population for this area is 514.
  • The data for The Branch[5] covers the portion of Karuah that is in the Great Lakes Council area and is north of the Pacific Highway, as well as some parts of Great Lakes Council (I'm not sure of the details for those).[6] The population for that area is 255.
  • Finally, North Arm Cove[7] covers the final part of Karuah as well as Tahlee, Carrington, North Arm Cove, most of Pindimar and Part of Tea Gardens.[8] The population for this area is 701.

Adding all of these together we arrive at a total population of 2,327 for the very large area of several hundred square km, only 73.7 of which is the actual suburb. Neither Port Stephens or Great Lakes Councils were any help in narrowing the figure down so I've had to resort to local knowledge of the area which, admittedly, is WP:OR. I estimate that the actual population of the Karuah suburb (Port Stephens AND Great Lakes portions) is somewhere between 1,200 and 1,500 persons so I'm going to replace the estimate of 2000 that is in the article with that figure. --AussieLegend (talk) 00:53, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
