Dead or missing links

This article has been FA for awhile, but now it has citations that need to be fixed, citations that need to be added, and dead links. Please resolve; will start an FAR if no progess made in a month pbp 17:58, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

Template-based, MOS:RJL-compliant exit list

Below is the exit list that was added to the article by Purplebackpack89 (talk · contribs), which I converted to use templates in the process of pasting it here. As this is a Featured Article, we should refine the content to current/correct standards before adding it back into the article. NB: I wholeheartedly support adding a table of this kind into the article, I just want it to be done to follow current standards and expectations. See below for specific comments. Comments

  • Specific mileposts/distances need to be added. PB89's work used the older, hard-coded table format that lacked a mileage column, while our updated templates include that, and generate the km conversions automatically.
  • The connections at the state lines should be added, otherwise the initial and terminal mileposts are missing. Since length is terminal - initial + corrections, the lack of these means a reader a) won't get the full picture and b) could assume that the highway is shorter than it actually is.
  • The designation transitions along the turnpike should be added or spelled out in better detail since the table doesn't say where the turnpike becomes I-335 instead of I-35, nor does it say where it becomes I-70.
    • I've added that; probably should add where the Turnpike ends and I-70 continues pbp 03:04, 16 September 2012 (UTC)
  • Overall, I support adding this table with the needed modifications to correct the above concerns of mine. I already handled the conversion to templates, so we just need to take it from there. Imzadi 1979  20:51, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
    • As primary author of this article, I oppose adding such a table. It is thoroughly redundant to the detailed list of interchanges. (In fact, if memory serves this article did have such a table back in 2006 or so, before it was an FA, and then that table was expanded out into prose). As long as the information is there I don't know why we need a table spelling out the same information that was given in prose form, other than RJL being a thing. —Scott5114 [EXACT CHANGE ONLY] 21:46, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
      • The article in this version passed years ago, it needs to be updated to comply to current standards. I would prefer if a standard exit list gets added as opposed to the prose list of interchanges. Dough4872 23:16, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
        • Honestly, I could go either way. If the exit list table is added, I would fold in the prose exit list into the RD. –Fredddie 23:28, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
        • Again, Dough, you're not giving any reason for having a table, other than RJL existing. The way I see it the prose exceeds the RJL requirements by expanding the information to the point that it no longer can fit in a table. This is the situation that WP:IAR is referring to. —Scott5114 [EXACT CHANGE ONLY] 23:50, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
          • I'm with Fredddie on this one; the prose list could and probably should be folded into the RD section, and the RJL table should be inserted into its place. Imzadi 1979  23:58, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
            • I'm obviously with Freddie as well. Virtually every other Interstate article has an exit list table, and it's not detrimental to the article in any way pbp 03:04, 16 September 2012 (UTC)
              • Gonna support the exit list for consistency reasons. --Rschen7754 04:31, 16 September 2012 (UTC)
                • Keep in mind that I am not actually advocating the exit list. My suggestion was only for if we go with the exit list. –Fredddie 04:52, 16 September 2012 (UTC)
  • This exit list omits the untolled portions. There is a portion on either end of the turnpike which is untolled but owned by KTA. The south end, from mile 0 to mile 19, is signed as being part of the turnpike (so Exit 4 needs to be included in this). The KTA-owned portion of the highway on the east end extends deep into Kansas City, ending at the 18th Street interchange. Much of this appears to be administered by KDOT, is not marked as part of the Turnpike, and uses I-70 exit numbers, but the official "end of the Kansas Turnpike" signage still stands at 18th Street. Historically this article covers both of these segments; the pre-existing list of interchanges includes coverage of them. —Scott5114 [EXACT CHANGE ONLY] 01:41, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
  • I added exit list entries for the southern end of the turnpike.  V 19:52, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
  • And added exit list entries for the eastern end of the turnpike.  V 21:37, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
    • Should we include Nick Badwey Plaza in the exit list? While it was once included on the main body of the signs, it's basically just a memorial interchange, and is signed as such. —Scott5114 [EXACT CHANGE ONLY] 04:46, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
      • I would not include Nick Badwey in the exit list. However, I would mention the designation in the Interchanges or Route description section, and explain who he was.  V 15:16, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
  • Are we sure that the portion of I-70 east of the Bonner Springs interchange is maintained by the Kansas Turnpike Authority? KDOT's Wyandotte County Pavement Management Information System Report (select Wyandotte County and scroll down to the I070 entries) begins showing I-70 information from county MP 1.779, which is the overpass of the Bonner Springs interchange trumpet. The report then shows each of the interchanges east to the 18th Street Expressway. There is an entry for county MP 14.311 with the phrase OLD END KTA. The easternmost point in the table with KTA milepoints is the Bonner Springs–Kansas City boundary (3.124, or 225 + 0.474). Thoughts?  V 18:11, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
    • I doubt that it is. It has the character of a KDOT road, uses KDOT sign gantries, the older signs are KDOT-standard demountable copy, etc. The KTA shield stops being shown after Bonner Springs (though westbound I-70 is shown with KTA shields on I-435). But the terminus sign is still at 18th Street. I suspect it was built as part of the Turnpike but later turned over to KDOT. —Scott5114 [EXACT CHANGE ONLY] 12:23, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Map scales

Can someone with access to the sources please add scale information to the map citations in the article? If the scale isn't noted on the map, sometimes it's available on the DB record at http://www.worldcat.org/ (which would also allow us to list the ISBN or OCLC number for the source). If that fails, a |scale=Scale not given works so long as the scale is fixed. If it's a dynamic map that can be zoomed, then it can be omitted entirely. Imzadi 1979  19:47, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

The two cites without scales were added by User:Scott5114[1] and User:Dough4872[2]. Hopefully, they can add them. DrKay (talk) 18:15, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

New paragraph containing recent statistics in intro?

I was thinking of adding the following paragraph to the intro and make this paragraph second from the bottom:

A total of 40,194,571 vehicles used the Kansas Turnpike from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017, amounting to a total of 1,722,947,563 miles driven.[1] Vehicles drove an average of 43.30 miles per trip and had an average revenue of $3.29 per trip.[2] This amounted to a total revenue of about $112 million, with adjustments. The most frequently used interchange was the Eastern Terminal, with 13,157,500 cars entering and exiting, while the least used was the Cassoday K-177 interchange, with only about 200,000 vehicles using it.[3]

What is everyone's thoughts on adding this paragraph?

Be careful that you don't fall into the trap of recentism. I think putting this in the lead would do just that. --Rschen7754 04:02, 25 March 2018 (UTC)

Move around some sections?

This article has some quirky grouping of sections. "Speed limits" is a subsection of "Design" (I don't really see how that fits in), "Design" is its own section, (very unusual for a road article). I kind of think both "speed limits" and "design" should be subsections of "History". What yall think? Needforspeed888 (talk) 22:07, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

Considering that speed limits are a function of design, that pairing works well for me. I don't view that content as part of the history, so it makes sense to me to keep it separate. WP:USRD/STDS is just a starting point for the typical sections, but it isn't the final word. Several FA-quality highway articles have additional sections beyond what that guideline mentions because those articles would be incomplete without them. Imzadi 1979  22:28, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
  • Overall, this one looks fine to me, although I see one potential issue: some of the information from the tolls section is from a few years ago and may be outdated; if someone could take a look at possibly updating, that would be nice. Hog Farm Bacon 20:54, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
  • There are considerable duplicate links that should be addressed; this script can be installed: User:Evad37/duplinks-alt SandyGeorgia (Talk) 18:30, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
    • I've removed duplicate links within each major section, but not links duplicated from section to section. Pinging Scott5114 to take a look at the tolling information. Imzadi 1979  04:18, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

Exit 53A

I saw that clip posted by the Kansas Turnpike Authority mentionning the new Exit 53A who's a cashless exit ramp in East Wichita is now open. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9-suBclqBs --Sd-100 (talk) 13:41, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Tolls not up to date?

Tolls for K-TAG users are lower than for cash customers, so a two-axle vehicle with a K-TAG is charged only $11.15 to travel the entire length of the turnpike, while the same vehicle is charged $15 when paying in cash - I'm aware this is original research, but are we sure this is the current amount? I drove on the Turnpike a couple days ago, and the tolls shown there were higher, I believer. Source is from 2017. Hog Farm Talk 16:18, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

Color of route

Does anyone think that this highway should be highlighted green instead of red? Like most of the other turnpikes (i.e. Massachusetts, Connecticut, Ohio, etc...)? NintendoTTTEfan2005 (talk) 18:18, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
