@Ish ishwar: It might be better to crop this because she’s looks to be standing on tatami and is not wearing any uwabaki. There’s no real encyclopedic value is seeing her lower body in my opinion. — Marchjuly (talk) 23:19, 15 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

sure, i cropped to just above the red ribbon. Do you think it should be cropped further to just get the upper torso – say, maybe at just below where her bent elbow is?. (Of course, always feel free to make any cropping improvements if you are so inclined to venture into the commons water.) – ishwar  (speak) 03:24, 16 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
did something similar to File:鈴木環那女流二段.jpg (which also gets rid of more of the computer monitor in the background too). She has yet to get an english page, but it does affect ja.wiki... peace – ishwar  (speak) 03:33, 16 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again for finding these images. The current crop seems fine. The ideal photos for these article would be the "official" ones used on their JSA profiles, but getting a release for those seems like it would take a bit of effort. It's good that some fans are now posting pictures. I've thought about hanging around JSA HQ one day to see if I could get any one to allow me to take their picture, but it seems too paparazzi like and probably even a little creepy to approach female women professionals out of the blue on the street. About the Satomi photo, the original Flickr image makes sense contextually because you can see her and others standing on a tatami covered stage in their socks/stockings. The crop, however, seem to take the photo out of context and makes it seem a tad bit unusual, like she forgot her shoes or something. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:36, 16 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
yeah, i dont think i would do that myself, haha. One noncreepy way might be to befriend Styczyńska, who is really interested in promoting shogi outside of Japan, to introduce you to folks. However, i guess she doesnt hang out with all her colleagues and, well, that would be very proactive of you to say the least. I do have a few personal photos of Ishikawa and Kondou (6-dan) that i'll eventually get off my old computer...
another point about the crop is that if we show legs/feet of female players to the exclusion of male legs/feet, we can be seen as introducing more gender bias, which we dont need. So, it's a good move to crop, i think.
also, i was trying to see if i figure out the date on this Ichitarō Doi photo here: https://www.shogi.or.jp/column/2017/05/post_163.html. I think it's likely to be in the public domain since it was probably taken in the 1950s at the latest, but without a clear date i can't say for sure. Although wikipedia frowns on it (to its detriment in my opinion), the photo may be a good candidate for fair use since we can't reasonably get any free use photos decades after his death. But, fair use is kind of a hassle here... – ishwar  (speak) 05:08, 16 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
