Article name[edit]

I have moved this article from KNBN to KNBN-TV. Consensus on both WP:NC#Broadcasting and Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Television_Stations#Article_names is that the article name should reflect the actual call letters of the TV station. As can be seen here: [1] the call letters for this station are in fact KNBN. History of NBC in Rapid City[edit]

I'm a bit lost on the history of NBC in Rapid City. KRSD-TV, gap, KEVN-TV, KNBN-LP (ch 27, became KWBH-LP ?), KNBN (ch 21) ? The editor on October 26, 2011 claimed to have worked at KNBN for 14 years, which would go back to around 1997. The article currently states that KNBN signed on in 2000. Yet there are earlier entries for Rapid City NewsCenter1 at archive.org such as http://web.archive.org/web/19991005045732/http://www.newscenter1.com/. There are staff bios within these archives which also states earlier start dates at the station. What is the correct history? Thanks. --Chaswmsday (talk) 11:03, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I can pick up the history of NBC in Rapid City in the late 1970's. At that time the NBC affiliate was KOTA-TV. I am not certain how long they had been the affiliate. If my memory is correct, around 1982 NBC switched affiliations to KEVN-TV. KEVN-TV had been the ABC affiliate. KOTA-TV became the ABC affiliate at that time and continues to be today.

In May of 1996 KEVN-TV dropped the NBC affiliation to become a FOX affiliate. That move left NBC with no local station to carry their programming. A group of local businessmen formed Rapid Broadcasting and purchased a low power license on channel 24 and got the NBC affiliation. Channel 24 went on the air with NBC programming in July 1996. Within 18 months Rapid Broadcasting got another low power license on channel 27. This license offered higher power than the channel 24 license. The NBC signal was moved to channel 27 at this time. A couple of years later there was an auction for a full power license on channel 21. The auction was won by Rapid Broadcasting and the NBC programming was moved to channel 21.

As NBC moved from channel 24 to 27 to 21 the call letters on those channel numbers were changed. I believe all 3 held the call letters KNBN at one time or another. Currently channel 24 is known as KKRA. It is a low power station that operates in analog. Channel 27 is known as KWBH and is also a low power station that operates in analog. Channel 21 is KNBN and broadcasts 3 program streams on it's bandwidth.

The name NewsCenter 1 was chosen because Rapid Broadcasting knew they would be on several different channels before ending up on channel 21. Additionally translator and cable channel numbers were going to be all over the place. The number 1 was chosen as it is the only number not used for over the air or cable channels. Hopefully this would eliminate the confusion of watching NewsCenter 21 on cable channel 10 for example. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.251.182.26 (talk) 18:53, 15 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
