Gay Icon Project

In my effort to merge the now-deleted list from the article Gay icon to the Gay icons category, I have added this page to the category. I engaged in this effort as a "human script", adding everyone from the list to the category, bypassing the fact-checking stage. That is what I am relying on you to do. Please check the article Gay icon and make a judgment as to whether this person or group fits the category. By distributing this task from the regular editors of one article to the regular editors of several articles, I believe that the task of fact-checking this information can be expedited. Thank you very much. Philwelch 21:55, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Early life - edit of 15 February 2007 by 84.196.229.189

This edit changed a couple of sentences to read "Roberts's parents divorced when she was four, and her mother remarried. Her father died of cancer when Roberts was nine." This IP has a history of introducing incorrect information, but I hesitate to revert the edit because I have no independent way to verify it. Please could someone who has check it out?

I know, I know. I should reference the diff. I haven't got the hang of doing that yet. Philip Trueman 11:46, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Born Julia, not Julie

See http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000210/bio Julie Fitzgerald

IMDB is not a trusted source. It's edited by people just like Wikipedia is. There are other sources that corroborate "Julie," like this one. This has been covered MANY times on this talk page. This issue should be considered closed. Mike H. I did "That's hot" first! 01:20, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Highest paid actress

I think the second highest paid actress portion of this page should be removed because Witherspoon isn't there yet. That $29 million salary rumor was quashed by her rep so...

yes but Reese was named highest payed actrees in hollywood in 2007 with 15-20 million per flim so if not the second shes the same as julia no actress has ever got 29 million for a flim (only Cameron Dias got something like that all together including box office profetts not on film money alone) male actors get more than woman —Preceding unsigned comment added by Veggiegirl (talkcontribs) 16:08, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Picture under "Personal life"

OK, I realize that this probably wasn't intentional, but placing the "Roberts with Private First Class Sowell at Incirlik hospital, Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, December 7, 2001" picture under Personal life and then starting with Relationships means that the picture is placed next to the text about Roberts' relationships, which isn't a good idea if she didn't have a relationship with Sowell (and while I'm no expert on Julia Roberts or her personal life, nothing in the text suggests she had). I'll remove it. If it should be in the article, it should be placed in a better way. Julle (talk) 20:14, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

"Tinkerhell" Information?

While I'm not usually one to seek out this kind of information, I have to admit that I was a little disappointed to see that there wasn't anything in this article about Julia's infamously difficult behavior on movie sets. Naturally, I'm almost positive I've only seen references to this on IMDB, which isn't exactly truthiness central. Nonetheless, it might be interesting to see some good, verifiable info on the popular perception of Julia as a difficult actress to work with. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 163.120.254.253 (talk) 13:01, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Born Julie or Julia?

Until today, the article said she was "Julia Roberts (born 'Julie Fiona Roberts')." Was she born "Julie" or "Julia"? If it's Julie, we should get that back in there. JDoorjam Talk 23:25, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Her father was Scottish. Why is this not included? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.176.142.249 (talk) 12:26, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Because none of the IPs who ever tried to insert this can come up with a verifiable and reliable source to confirm it. The best ever offered was not verified as true. In fact, it was not a valid source at all. If her father was indeed Scottish, one would think it wouldn't be so impossible to verify. Wildhartlivie (talk) 13:03, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

I just wanted to take the time to post the truth, and although I wont go into detail's. I was a bit startled with the ancestory of Mrs. Robert's. I have worked with the woman, and let me just say she is wonderful! Mrs. Robert's has stated that she is indeed Cherokee, and I am sorry to tell you but Huffington Post is not a reliable source. Mrs. Robert's has never claimed German ancestory. Nor has her neice, or brother as far as I know. I would do the research by putting it in google, and you will find many source's which state that Mrs. Robert's is Cherokee, and English. Wikipedia is defintely not a reliable source. The reason this is important is because some celeberities as I have known from experience do not like to aknowledge certain part's of there blood. In no way should anyone claim someone else's history as being a certain race, color if the person themselve's have not claimed it. If you have not heard it from the celeberities mouth themselve's then DO NOT AKNOWLEDGE IT AS FACT!!!! Like I said the Huffington Post is a "lady" claiming Mrs. Robert's has certain ancestory. She is not Mrs. Robert's, and most of the geneology stuff on blood line's is crap. So, I am sorry to say but huffington post is not a reliable source to document on Julia's ancestory. By the way, any blind man can see her Indian blood through her chiseled cheek's.

  • I don't often look at WP:BLP, which guides us on biographies of living people. Is there some guidance there about limiting ancestry to self-proclaimed ancestry?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 21:28, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

Born in Atlanta, Ga./Grew up in Smyrna, Ga.

Julia Roberts was not born in Smyrna, Ga., but rather Atlanta, Ga. Her parents operated an acting school off of Juniper Street in midtown. When they divorced, Julia, along with her mother and sister moved to Smyrna, Ga. Julia graduated for Campbell High School in Smyrna.

See The New Georgia Encyclopedia [2]; IMDb and other sites have her bith place listed incorrectly.

The birth information in the current article is self contradicting, claiming she was born Smyrna while simultaneously stating that she was born in a hospital in the Midtown neighborhood in the city of Atlanta. Though she is certainly a remarkable woman I doubt she could have been born in two places at once. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.66.161.117 (talk) 20:40, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

The second was a documentry which I just love of her in Mongolia. It was fascinating. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.240.192.190 (talk) 19:27, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

People keep getting it wrong

Julia was born in Atlanta at Crawford Long Hospital, now Emory Midtown. I don't know why people keep putting she was born in Smyrna, she wasn't, but moved there later. Instead of people relying on online articles for confirmation of her birth place, how about using these books listed here: https://www.google.com/#q=Julia+roberts+born+crawford+long+hospital&tbm=bks Carsonmc (talk) 19:05, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

Birthplace

This article continuously gets changed to say Julia was born in Smyrna, GA, rather than Crawford Long Hospital. The cites for "Smyrna" are wrong. Googling "Julia Roberts Crawford Long Hospital" reveals much more reliable sources than those stating she was born in Smyrna. Why won't people leave this alone. I'm tired of changing it. And thus leave it wrong here, which makes Wiki look like a fool. Carsonmc (talk) 22:10, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

Missing "Flatliners" Lgoldsmianne (talk) 17:37, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Article doesn't include the movie Flatliners in her list of movies. She starred in this film in 1990.--Lgoldsmianne (talk) 17:37, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

It is mentioned in her filmography. If you can find a reliable source that discusses it, feel free to add it to the article. --Ebyabe talk - Health and Welfare ‖ 17:42, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Error in introduction: She wasn't the highest-paid actress in the world throughout the 1990s

Demi Moore was the highest-paid actress in 1995. I don't know about other years, but this alone disputes the claim that Roberts was "throughout" the '90s.

On another note, there is no reason for a citation next to her year of birth. A citation implies the existence of ambiguity or contention. Roberts' birthdate has never varied in the press. A citation next to the birthdate is necessary in articles for people who have lied about their age, such as Jessica Chastain, but in Roberts' case it is pointless and potentially confusing to readers. Iistal (talk) 00:13, 9 November 2016 (UTC)

The referenced Guardian article, from 2000, does say that she "has been Hollywood's highest paid actress for a decade". I wouldn't be surprised if that's an error, though, or just an over-simplification. Can you find a source for Demi Moore? As for the citation - they're certainly more important when the fact is controversial, but citations are never a bad thing, and I don't think this one causes any confusion. Korny O'Near (talk) 16:43, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
I thought it was common knowledge about Moore, but here's a source [3]. Iistal (talk) 23:34, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
Great - I just changed "throughout the 1990s" to "throughout most of the 1990s", and added a footnote. Korny O'Near (talk) 18:22, 10 November 2016 (UTC)

Tattoo

I would contest Dr K reverting my edit about her tattoo. It is no more trivial than a hundred thousand other items about various people in Wikipedia. As for it being "unsourced," a picture is worth a thousand words.

Gil gosseyn (talk) 07:06, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

Please consult WP:RS to find out that pictures(!) are not reliable sources. After you have studied RS then please consult WP:BLP to find out that we have to use top quality sources for any statements involving living people. As far as pictures being worth a thousand words, I am sure you have heard of Photoshop, so please no more arguments like that. And yes, the tattoo is trivial and please see WP:OTHERCRAPEXISTS. Dr. K. 07:22, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

http://people.com/tv/julia-roberts-lets-loose-on-her-tattoos-pal-george-clooneys-engagement/ "Her gallery of tattoos include all of her three children’s names..." This appearance was also the subject of an ABC News Website story: http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/julia-roberts-reveals-details-idiotic-tattoo/story?id=23626657 The story was also written up on the Redbook Website and the Today's Parent site. So it seems you are in the minority by dismissing the information as trivial or unworthy of note.

And while apparently YOU consider tattoos "trivial", they are significant to the person who gets them, as well as to others interested in those people, so I STRONGLY contest your dismissal, unless you can prove that WP also considers them "trivial." Gil gosseyn (talk) 11:46, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

First, don't shout. Be civil in a conversation and keep calm. I don't have to be subjected to this. Second, you want to add

She has her children's names tattooed on her lower back.

The source you provided actually says that Roberts won't reveal where she has them. You cannot combine a source and a picture to synthesise your information because this is synthesis. I still think that mentioning the tattoos is trivial and undue weight. If Roberts was known for her tattoos, or a controversy existed about them, then perhaps they could be mentioned in her biography. But just because this information appeared in two or three magazines does not automatically get elevated to encyclopædic status. Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. And I am not in the "minority". So far, noone has supported you inclusion of the tattoo info, so currently you have no consensus. Let's wait now for more editors to chime in because it is clear to me that my arguments have no chance of convincing you. Dr. K. 15:25, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

Personal Life - Husband

It says on the personal life section, "Roberts, and her CAMERAMAN husband..." Her husband is a CINEMATOGRAPHER... not a cameraman. Got a question wrong on quiz night because of this. Dinonick (talk) 09:25, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

If you look at his Wikipedia article, it looks like he was more or less a cameraman until 2007, when he transitioned into becoming a full-time cinematographer. Which means that he was a cameraman when they got married in 2000. The wording could probably be better. But you might have cause to protest at your quiz night - it depends on the exact wording of the question. Korny O'Near (talk) 23:17, 28 April 2020 (UTC)
