Opposition to the Charlottetown Accord[edit]

when she was the president of National Action Committee on the Status of Women, NAC opposed the Charlottetown Accord, which led to the cuts of the budget of NAC. What was her role in the event? Jackzhp 14:00, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Marital status[edit]

I note that she was American born. No mention of her marital status ?

LGBT?[edit]

Am I missing something about this person.

I note a strong concern for 'women only' at the exclusion of men, is there a connection to lesbianism ? or a WP:COI that has been overlooked ?

Political views ... ie censorship[edit]

Seems this article needs to expand to include the range of her political views.

She was one of the most powerful 'feminists' in Canada in the alst 30 years.

Self-hating?[edit]

"Self-hating jew" is offensive, inaccurate and poorly sourced. It should be removed immediately.

Citizenship[edit]

Does she hold American and Canadian citizenship? Nietzsche 2 (talk) 09:19, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Background[edit]

According to the CBC article which profiles Judy Rebick, she came to Toronto at age 9. I don't think "Brooklyn raised" is accurate, as it implies that Rebick was essentially an American who made the decision to move north. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mattnf (talkcontribs) 18:59, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The current dispute[edit]

User:Soosim has attempted on several occasions to include in this article a statement purportedly made by Judy Rebick at a recent public forum. I have opposed this, on the grounds that the statement has not been cited to a reliable source (let alone a reliable secondary source).

There is a Youtube video that depicts Judy Rebick making the statement in question. WP:BLP is quite clear that we are not permitted to use Youtube clips in biographies of living people, unless the clips in question have been presented by reliable news entities. The logic of this is fairly obvious: videos may be manipulated, and statements may be presented in a wildly out-of-context way. This particular Youtube clip has not been presented by a reliable source and is therefore unacceptable here.

The pro-Israel advocacy group "HonestReporting" has printed what purports to be a short extract from Rebick's speech on its website. This is also not an acceptable source for a BLP. HonestReporting is an advocacy group, not an accredited news agency; its position on the Israel-Palestine issue is diametrically opposed to Rebick's; and its brief "commentary" on this matter is derived from the same unreliable Youtube clip referenced above.

Even if we assume for the sake of argument that HR's quote is accurate, that still leaves us with unresolved issues of notability and context. HR's only commentary on the matter is a two or three sentence excerpt purportedly taken from Rebick's speech. This leaves the strong possibility that the lines in question were pulled out of context; moreover, there is no evidence that the statement in question passes the threshold of encyclopedic notability.

If these are the only two sources available, then the quote should not be included.

I take the position that this is a serious WP:BLP issue, and that this fact trumps any considerations about the number of reverts allowed in a twenty-four hour period. I will raise this matter on the Canadian Wikipedians' Notice Board momentarily. CJCurrie (talk) 04:57, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

thanks cj for your clarity of reason. i am a bit perplexed that you say "purported" and use other euphemisms to suggest that judy didn't say what was reported. did you look at the video clip and then at the quote lifted from there in the report? 100% accurate. anyway, i am glad to see that you are on top of this particular issue. i will keep you posted and see you around...thanks again! Soosim (talk) 05:56, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I strongly suspect that Rebick made the statement in question (though I also think HR has quoted it out of context). Since the video's reliability isn't confirmed, I can't be 100% certain -- hence my wording in the previous section. WP:BLP has a rather high threshold for inclusion, in some respects. CJCurrie (talk) 06:01, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
hey cj - thanks for the quick response. the video clip is not posted by some right-wing, pro-israel group. rather, by supporters of israel apartheid week and of judy. [see here] for example. so again, not real sure what you are referring to by saying things like 'reliabilty not confirmed' etc. also, you talk about 'serious violations' of wp:blp - care to explain more? i just didn't see anything on that page that indicates any violation, not to mention any 'serious violation'. help me understand you, cj! thanks as usual. Soosim (talk) 06:21, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I believe "Remove unsourced or poorly sourced contentious material" is the most apropos section, though not the only one. CJCurrie (talk) 23:58, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
