Some Suggestions for Improvements[edit]

New Wikipedia user here so please bear with me.

Autonym of Judeo-Shirazi[edit]

I know for a fact anecdotally and it is backed up in "Judeo-Iranian Languages”, Borjian 2015 that the language is called by it's speakers "Jidi". I will be using this name hereafter as it's the one I'm comfortable with.

Relations and Intelligibility[edit]

There should be elaboration on Jidi's relation to other Iranian languages, especially the "Dialects of Fars" and Achomi, the latter of with which I know for certain it shares at a high degree of mutual intelligibility with.

Writing System[edit]

Jidi does not have a literary tradition as mentioned in "Judeo-Iranian Languages". This is further supported by the obvious dearth of examples of written Jidi in Hebrew or otherwise. When compelled to write Jidi out, its speakers would write in whatever script is most convenient for them which in no particular order for living speakers would be Perso-Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin script, with other scripts forming a negligible minority.

Given this premise, it should be a topic of discussion whether under "writing system" there should be any script at all and if it does, it should include the native scripts of its speakers and a note that no literary tradition exists for the language.

Vocabulary[edit]

The table for vocabulary comparisons should be expanded to include Farsi, for a number of reasons:

  1. It's the state language and most common tongue in Iran. In addition, it is also spoken by almost every living Jidi speaker outside of the descents of Shirazi Jews in Israel, who may only know Jidi but not Farsi.
  2. Its genetically much closer to Jidi than the "dialect of Isfahan", a Judeo-Median language/dialect, making the differences more significant. Both are SW Iranian languages.
  3. Since Judeo-Persian is a literary language rooted in Farsi, it would help clear up some of the confusion I have seen about Judeo-Persian's relation to Judeo-Shirazi.

I would also advocate the expansion of the comparison table to include a major Achomi dialect, such as Lari.

Number of Speakers[edit]

While this number would be very hard to impossible to find, an upper bound on the number of speakers could be given with a high degree of confidence. The Jewish community of Shiraz historically numbered in the low tens of thousands and the number of living speakers is significantly below that.

As with many poorly known, studied, and attested to languages, it is challenging to find detailed formally published works on Jidi. The knowledge possessed by individuals who either speak the language or otherwise are connected to it is often sufficient to fill gaps in description and attestation but must be formally published to meet the standards of a platform like Wikipedia.

I hope this fosters some discussion and collaboration not only on how this page can be improved, but also making existing works on Jidi more accessible and publishing more of the information on this wonderful language I know is out there.
