General cleanup[edit]

I tried to clean up the original text into something that sounded less like a bad mechanical translation. Unfortunately the most I know about the Duke is what I've gleaned from reading El Conde Lucanor, and I don't know where this text was taken from, so it's spotty quality at best. Title?[edit]

The Spanish wiki states that Juan Manuel inherited the Grand Lordship of Villena and bears the title of Prince, Duke and Lord of Villena, whereas the Catalan wiki states that he is the Lord of Escalona, Peñafiel and Villena. What precisely was his proper title(s), what was the title he was best known by, and why is this English wiki article specifically titled "..., Duke of Peñafiel"? o (talk) 06:31, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Juan Manuel had a big number of titles, as general in medieval nobility. He was Duke of Peñafiel (of course) and also Lord of Escalona and Prince of Villena, which means he was also Lord of all the towns which where included in the Seigneury of Villena. In Spanish he is known just as 'Don Juan Manuel' and in Catalan as 'Joan Manuel de Castella', and I think that the addition of 'Duke of Peñafiel' was in order to avoid ambiguity. However, that was not the more relevant title, as being Prince of Villena is not just a higher rank but it suposed to rule one of the biggest feudal states in medieval Spain. Hey guys, I suggest changing the name of the wiki article to Don Juan Manuel, which is the equivalent in several other languages (and how his modern editions are published), or to Juan Manuel. What do you think?Johannesemmanuelis (talk) 02:25, 27 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I was the one that added the extra section, with the reference to the Miscelánea Murciana article (I do have a lot of other sources that explain why he should be called don or just Juan Manuel instead of those bombastic titles he got from Aragon. And just to chip in the previous discussion above this section, the problem with having him as Prince of Villena is that this title was Aragonese and most –all of his political life– happens in Castile. It would be like identifying Barack Obama as the Winner of the Courage Award (that he did get, indeed) and not the 44th President of the US.Johannesemmanuelis (talk) 02:29, 27 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Spanish titles[edit]
