Which U.S. senator?[edit]

Re: the sentence

  • “He told his children that after taking the exam, his US Senator paid a surprise visit to his family home, "to make sure he wasn't Black," before nominating him to the Academy.”

Does anyone know which U.S. senator this was, or at least the date, so it would be down to two senators from List of United States Senators from New Jersey? Hgrosser (talk) 19:43, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Weber's religion.[edit]

Apparently, there seems to be some controversy over Weber's religious views and whether they are relevant or not. While I admit that there is very little relevance here (in this article), I think as along as this statement is a footnote (that has a proper citation), it would be fine to include in this article (Preferable, in the infobox that hides trivial info). If you (146.142.1.10) knew him personally or have evidence for your conclusion than you must either verify your identity or give a citation that states Weber's religious views in a comprehensive fashion. You are correct that I knew him personally (though not well), but I cannot prove it. I know of no comprehensive published statement of Weber's religious views, nor did he ever make such a statement to me. I can tell what I personally saw of his religious observance--but that's not acceptable proof here. I can tell you Virginia Trimble told me she converted to Judaism in order to marry Weber (they were married at a county courthouse)--but I didn't quote her in a magazine. I can tell you that Weber made yarzteit contributions to his synagogue in memory of his late wife, his late son, and Richard Feynman--but I don't have a copy of the yartzeit book. On page 55 of Gravity's Shadow, there is a story about how one of Weber's students consulted the Lubavitcher rabbi for advice on securing divine blessing for the gravitational wave detection experiment, and when he told Weber about this, Weber's reaction was not scorn, but amused encouragement. Many, perhaps most, Jews are not what Christians would consider "believers," but this is not the same as calling us atheists, and I do not think the atheist category is a good fit for Weber. More fundamentally, I do not see why you are so concerned with trying to fit Weber into a theological category. He made no public statements about his theology, or lack thereof. Respect that. Okay, I understand your point. I think you're telling the truth. I'll remove the label. Ninmacer20 (talk) 06:01, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New Source of Technical Information[edit]

Weber's assistant, Darrell Gretz, has just published his memoirs of working with Weber at https://www.aps.org/units/fhp/newsletters/spring2018/weber.cfm. I would like to ask that someone with a physics background please integrate some of that material into this page. EAWH (talk) 16:47, 27 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
