Joseph Meyerhoff[edit]

Joseph Meyerhoff was an American immigrant born in Ukraine on April 8, 1899. Meyerhoff grew up in Baltimore and graduated from Baltimore City College; he then attended and completed his law degree at the University of Maryland in the mid 1930's. Joseph Meyerhoff married in the 1930s to Rebecca Witten and had two children, Harvey and Eleanor, where they lived and grew up Baltimore. He practiced law for years upon graduation from the University Of Maryland Law School until he opened a construction company with his brother called Monumental Properties Inc. This firm lasted for nearly 40 years after creation until it was sold for roughly 180 million dollars making Meyerhoff and his family one of the wealthiest in Baltimore. Monumental Properties was responsible for many buildings in Baltimore, including various shopping centers throughout the west side. In the early 1950s Meyerhoff and other respectable Jewish American business men were chosen to help the struggling Israel crises that arose during the countries initial establishment. Joseph Meyerhoff continued his career as an avid philanthropist when he served as president of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in the 1970s, where he personally contributed money and helped raise millions for additions to the Orchestra. He also supported many other Jewish Charities and art museums throughout Baltimore and was eventually indicted into the Baltimore business Hall of Fame along with Robert Merrick. His legacy lives on through these charities and scholarships and through his various contributions to the Baltimore Symphony orchestra.
